Does anyone know without Googling it why the Southern Right Whale is called that?
I do and no I didn't Google it.
I read it years ago

Dredging the far reaches of my memory........was it because it was the "right" whale?  i.e. it was the one they wanted to catch because they could harvest what they wanted from it.  And the 'southern' was that it was found in the southern hemisphere?

I think it was something to do with whale oil.

Or Vera Lynn... "Whale meat again...", ha ha

Yes, the Southern Right Whale was the one to catch because it yielded the most oil
