A question for smart techies (or anyone else :)

Can someone please explain to me what are the benefits of having bluetooth turned on on my phone and if there are any negatives.

I've got it turned off but one of my apps wants it on and I don't know what it does exactly. I did start to google but my eyes glazed over. I want the KISS version.

Do you turn it off and on when you want to Az or do you just leave it on.  I'm thinking of the phone battery use.

No idea re battery use, I leave it on. I recharge my phone when in the car and usually every second night I put it on the charger.
