No more national parks as Tony Abbott pledges to support loggers as the 'ultimate conservationists'

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has said he will not support the creation of any more national parks in a speech lauding timber workers as "the ultimate conservationists".

Mr Abbott also told a timber industry dinner on Tuesday night that he would create a new Forestry Advisory Council to support the industry.

"We don't support, as a government and as a Coalition, further lockouts of our forests," Mr Abbott said. "We have quite enough National Parks, we have quite enough locked up forests already. In fact, in an important respect, we have too much locked up forest."

"I salute you as people who love the natural world, as people who love what Mother Nature gives us and who want to husband it for the long-term best interests of humanity."

Mr Abbott said Canberra would now be "friendly country" rather than "hostile territory" for the forestry industry following the change of government.

Greens leader Christine Milne said: "Who in the 21st century would say the environment is meant for man and not just the other way around?

"There is no economic future for Australia in trashing our precious native forests and national parks ... In pandering to the forestry industry the Prime Minister's statements last night reveal he's not only anti-environment and anti-conservation, he's anti-jobs."

Can you show us a link to this poll of 'decent, normal' Australians.

What percentage of the decent,, normal poplutation did it canvas?

What criteria were used to establish their decency and normalcy and therefore eligability to participate in the poll?

What scrutiny was employed to ensure that no  indecent or abnormal individuals managed to cast a vote, thereby invalidating the result?

Re: Abbott pledges to support loggers as "the ultimate conservationists"

Hunt - The Environment Minister - In a government full of incompetents, Greg Hunt really does stand out as one of the most incompetent.

http://www.smh.com.au/environment/conservation/greg-hunt-approves-victorian-alpine-national-park-cat...

Greg Hunt approves Victorian Alpine National Park cattle grazing trial

Cattle grazing will return to Victoria's Alpine National Park after federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt approved a state government trial to have 60 to 300 cows in the park.

Mr Hunt's approval stands in contrast to the Gillard government which blocked a similar – albeit larger – cattle grazing trial, on the grounds it would damage the environment and the heritage values of the alpine region.

The Napthine government has pursued the trial saying it is necessary to test whether grazing reduces the risk of bushfires by removing fuel loads. Conservationists say there is little scientific rigour behind the program and past research shows cattle grazing has no impact on stopping bushfires, while damaging sensitive alpine ecology.

Tassie backlash over Tony Abbott's 'greenie-bashing'

"The Liberals are suggesting by repealing World Heritage and high conservation forests that that will somehow save the industry," deputy premier and forestry minister Bryan Green said in a statement.

"That's rubbish because what chance would Tasmanian timber from those areas ever have of being sold anywhere around the world?"

The World Heritage areas were part of the peace deal, with green groups vowing to end protests against Tasmanian timber products in return.

Wilderness Society spokesperson Vica Bayley, whose organisation is a signatory to the agreement, said the federal government should get behind the deal.

"Well-worn greenie-bashing rhetoric will not fix the problems," Mr Bayley said.

"The Tasmanian Forest Agreement is the best example in the country of environment, industry and union groups rolling up their sleeves to address real issues, and we urge the prime minister to support it.

"Axing the new World Heritage area won't benefit anyone. It won't protect jobs - these rely on the Tasmanian Forest Agreement, it will embarrass Australia and will reignite conflict in the forests."

Re: Abbott pledges to support loggers as "the ultimate conservationists"

Oh my goodness me.

Only 5% of National/State forests are National parks......like, yeah (not) we have enough 'locked up'?

National forests and National Parks, governed by the Crown.....rah, rah, rah- is a sure fire way to keep their sweaty palms on them for future mining, logging....whatever takes their sweet polling fancy.

Look up any National forest and see where the nearest mining/minerals are!

We are being told by TA that National forests have to be logged for 'furniture'?!.....

........under the well known brand name PAPER P.U.L.P. Inc perhaps ?....not many jobs for Australians in this lil' lark either as a couple of truck drivers to a port, unload onto a coupla ships (bound for China) and then we Aussies end up buying back our paper products at stinging prices.

.....oh my goodness me.
