Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott's government crackdown on asylum seeker boats will begin midweek.
Mr Abbott told reporters in Canberra on Monday that Operation Sovereign Borders starts on Wednesday.
"I am absolutely determined to stop the boats as quickly as we can," he said.
He said the policy will start to make a difference "from day one".
"Do I think that the boats will stop dead on day one of an incoming government? I wish. But it may not happen," Mr Abbott said.
People smugglers and their customers will start to notice a significant difference straight away, Mr Abbott said.
Under Mr Abbott's plan, 12 agencies involved in border protection would come under the command of a single three-star military commander.
However, not every element of the policy will commence straight away.
Mr Abbott said the general in charge of the plan will be announced shortly.
He also confirmed he planned to visit Jakarta later this month to meet with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
The date of the trip will be locked when schedules are settled.

And then Karen, if they don't agree with her she will give them the "stare"!
Seriously, didn't Abbott crucify the Labour govt for not having fixed the boat issue 3 days after they first came into power? And yet now he says it can't be fixed so quickly.
It's going to be a very interesting 3 years with no Ministers for Science, Climate Change, Energy, Youth, Disability, Status of Women, Aged Care, Mental Health, Early Childhood etc. Oh, but there will be a Minister for Sport.
And less women in cabinet than Afganastan. They're all too busy ironing and making themselves pretty for their men!
God help us all.

His count started on September 7
"BABIES, young children and pregnant women were on a stricken asylum-seeker boat rescued by the Australian navy at the
weekend, one of seven picked up enroute to Australia since the Coalition was elected.
Last night the number of asylum-seekers to arrive since September 7 had reached 480, including a boat carrying just four
asylum-seekers and two crew taken directly to Darwin after being detected near Ashmore Islands"
""Since the election, the Department of Immigration has continued to fly asylum-seekers from Christmas Island to Nauru and
Manus Island under an expulsion deal announced by former prime minister Kevin Rudd on July 19.
About 1300 asylum-seekers arrived in the week after the announcement, then the number of boats slowed gradually.
But there has been another spike since the election, prompting speculation that asylum-seekers may be
rushing to beat the Coalition's promised boat turnbacks.""
strangely I have not heard "Hadleys bell" toll this week or last week
