The seat of power in the Australian Taxation Office is set to move from Canberra to Sydney, tax workers have been told, overturning decades of public service tradition.
And the office consolidation that sparked industrial strife in Sydney and Brisbane is set to intensify as workers in other capitals are soon to be on the move, according to one of the ATO's unions.
The ATO confirmed on Wednesday that it was facing ''difficult decisions'', but took aim at the Australian Services Union, saying its message to members was ''disappointing'', ''disrespectful'' and included personal attacks on senior Tax Office staff.
The first of the major departments to be moved to Sydney.
Part of the Liberial Partys plan to make Sydney the Capital of Australia.

Can you imagine the uproar if the President of USA didn'r live in the White House or the Prime Minister of Briton didn't live in 10 Downing Street.
But we don't make any noise when Howard and noe Abbott choose to reside in Kirrabille House in Sydney and not in the Canberra the capital.

Yes, and judging by the ICAC talk this week it should be of real concern that the Libs Sydney centrify as much as they can and that a disproportionate number of the inner circle are from Sydney.

No
"But we don't make any noise when Howard and noe Abbott choose to reside in Kirrabille House in Sydney and not in the Canberra the "
Actually Howard was criticised, and Abbott has no choice at the moment because The Lodge is undergoing extensive renovations over 18 months.
I do though think it a bit dodgy that the Queen spends so much time living in Windsor Castleand not Buckingham Palace.
""Abbott wants to Move ATO to Sydney" Nonsense
I found the ASU secretary email wherein he included : "I have heard the rumours that Debt staff at the Sydney office will be redeployed to Parramatta". Seems more like Sydney to Sydney to me.
The Canberra Times also has reported: "ATO Commissioner Chris Jordan will be moving into the ATO office in the Sydney CBD while the employees who work there are being moved to Parramatta.
I hardly think the above warrants: "Abbott wants to Move ATO to Sydney", or is that just deliberate nonsense (exaggeration?)

"Fairfax revealed on Thursday that Commissioner of Taxation Chris Jordan is building plush offices for himself and his closest deputies on the top floor of the office's Latitude East building in Sydney's CBD."
Hardly the whole ATO moving to Sydney, and as for : "Chris Jordan is building plush offices for himself", you obviously do not appreciate the Public Service Works regime. However it reads well if one is pink, and not prone to research!
