Abstract Art - why talk about it if you don't get it.

I volunteer at a regional gallery and get to meet some wonderful, weird and wacky people.

But the ones that get up my goat are the ones who say "That looks like something a 5 year old would do." and expect me to agree with them.

And whilst we have a lot of community exhibitions that are amateurish enough (so perhaps the comment may be fair enough), the comment is usually reserved for iconic artists in major travelling exhibitions who are extremely well known.

Does anyone here like abstract art? And if you really hate it, why?

It's the emansipation of a free thinking soul and society where anyone can have a go and succeed however much talent you are lacking or endowed with
That's what's great about our society you can swap a paper clip for a speed boat if you just have a go

Is that the merit that Blue Poles has?

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

I am not holding my breath for anyone else giving answer and you have hit pretty close to the mark.

But I still live in hope that I may given an answer by some knowledgeable person on the finer points of Blue Poles and its merits ๐Ÿ™‚

Re: Abstract Art - why talk about it if you don't get it.

At often reflects the feelings of the artist
a few famous artists have gone through a blue phase and it is generally not when they are on top of the world
Maybe blue poles depicts the artists confusion or it may be the opposite and depicts tranquility
Really depends on who you are and how you percieve things a bit like glass half full or half empty
The wheel on the stool earlier reminded me of a book I read as a child "the wheel on the school" even though it is totally non art related it made me think of a moment in time that I had forgotten.

Like you julia , I would be very interested to know exactly which painting and which artist elicited such an unacceptable comment from a visitor the OP had volunteered to 'inform' by accepting the visitor into her 'group'

Perhaps a picture of said painting would also assist posters here !

Well said.

๐Ÿ™‚ you have the potential to be a successful art critic, wine connoisseur, astrologer or politician.

You would need to be much more verbose though

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.
