I volunteer at a regional gallery and get to meet some wonderful, weird and wacky people.
But the ones that get up my goat are the ones who say "That looks like something a 5 year old would do." and expect me to agree with them.
And whilst we have a lot of community exhibitions that are amateurish enough (so perhaps the comment may be fair enough), the comment is usually reserved for iconic artists in major travelling exhibitions who are extremely well known.
Does anyone here like abstract art? And if you really hate it, why?

He was actually criticised heavily throughout his life and still today.
And you are correct he didn't sell much while he was alive. It was only at the end of his painting days that his works started to sell well as the modernist movement as a whole was more apreciated.
But that is much like most artists that are important - Van Gogh being the classic example.

Martini you not only added another dimension to the debate but you also introduced some arty farty buzz words, words that add depth and meaning to all discussion on the subject of art in all its forms.
All forms of art have their own adopted words and phrases that elevate the person vocalizing those words and phrases on a totally separate plain of understanding. A plain that mere mortals struggle to attain but it constantly eludes them.

What are you talking about?
Is it because I said the word 'existentialist'? Anyone watching an Audrey Hepburn movie knows what that means.

Abstract Art - why talk about it if you dont get it.
I wonder if the same thing was going through the visitors mind? "Why has she waffled on for half an hour about this, cant she see a 5yo could've painted it?"
Having said that, it's a little rude to say something like that in earshot of the guide. They probably thought they were being funny and original and you'd never heard that comment before.

It's just like the Kardashian thing. People think it's all cool. Others think, **bleep**?
