We have people spreading the hate for everyone from the PM to the disabled and refugees everyday.

Today we have Adam Goodes, who truly lived up to his name.

Can I just say 1 thing - to a proud person who has got thru so much, had racism in ur own country most days of ur lives, some obvious in ur face, some not so obvious but let me tell u it hurts ur heart.

When i told of being told by an old woman at the bus stop that I shouldve been put down at birth - lots here told me "sticks n stones" "harden up" etc ect but it HURTS, it really hurts, these ppl saying it dont know u, they call u names based on notthing to do with u as a person.

Adam is strong, he has had the name calling from both sides, as have I, it breaks ur heart cos its like "How long will this go on for? Forever?"

Am I a dog? Is he an Ape? Hell no, we are strong & proud and if people dont like that well thats ur problem

And if ppl dont know Ape is racist? Well im happy, praps it means u havent used it 🙂

Of course it was a racist remark. I cant believe the amount of people in social media saying Goodes should just harden up, these people probably think they aren't racist either, but in my opinion if you aren't part of the solution..............

That's so true, but it goes both ways, we only ever hear of the racism toward one side.

I don't agree.

Indigenous people have been subjected to racism from the beginning of white settlement.  The way many speak to whites is the same way they themselves have been spoken to their whole lives. For some it is the only way they have learnt.

As the whites have been the dominant culture it is not surprising.  People who've been called the C word all their life don't understand the significance of being calling someone a c. Just as daydream can't understand the significance of calling someone and ape.

As to the subject of the op..... if my 13 yo spoke like that I would be ashamed and she would not be allowed to attend football games at all, ever.......

She used it in a way that is unacceptable to anyone who has been taught respect for others.

Some of the comments here are really sad, but I'd like to know why people can't just own their racist attitudes? Are you ashamed, or is it something else?

I see people excusing their racism for all sorts of reasons... they were called a bad name so have decided to become inherently bigoted... someone bludged a smoke off them... or they pretend they don't know ape is offensive to an aboriginal person... Or they try to bring up other insults and group them into a bland 'insult' category... or they blame the victim. I even saw the other days someone lecturing a fellow Australian about " our" culture but of course she prefaced her comment by assuring us she isn't racist. Surely nobody here is so uneducated they can't see blatant racism? Or am I wrong?

Adam Goodes spoke to the girl on the phone and has accepted her apology.. he asked that people don't pick on her because she is uneducated... I guess that's a bit like a lot of people here?
