Adelaide Zoo, Palm Oil and Orangutans

It's pretty well-known that the harvesting of palm oil impacts badly on the habitat of the orangutan. So Adelaide Zoo decides to contractually ditch a local (SA) ice-cream maker (Golden North, palm oil free) in favour of a large multi-national (Streets/Unilever) - who use palm oil in their icecream. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-08-15/zoos-sa-backflips-on-plans-to-stop-selling-golden-north/567340... But the Zoo has now bowed to public pressure and will now range both brands. Shame on the Adelaide Zoo for even considering this in the first place. What were they thinking ? (apart from $$$ of course)

I must add that I disagree with the use of the term "backflip", as you end up exactly how you started. This was more of a "morally bankrupt, environmentally vandalistic, economically expedient" sort of decision.

totally agree and as an Adeladian, i signed that i would not be going to the zoo again until they stooped using Streets.

Golden North changed their ingrediants so they could supply the zoo. Shame on the zoo for considering dumping them

Have you got any idea how many products on supermarket shelves have

palm oil listed as an ingredient?

I go blind every week reading ingredients on products and then deciding

what alternative product sill suits my needs.   It's really hard to find some

things without palm oil.

The sneaky blighters even try hiding it by naming it  'vegetable oil (palm)'

I am both outraged at,  and ashamed of Adelaide Zoo

It is really difficult to decide because I have tried to avoid products with Palm oil for years, but not companies that use sustainable palm oil.  Until that information is printed on a label then forget it.  I can't eat a kit kat since I saw that advertisement.  That's a Nestle's product but I think they have been switching over to sustainable plantations for palm oil.

Yuk!
