Jane, thank you for your response and advice. I will think carefully about it. I think my friend is somewhat depressed, worried, drained, burnt out, but with a strong sense of obligation to he parents. I also sense she is feeling a bit hopeless, and guilt for feeling that way. I will need to approach this carefully because I don't want her to feel I am judging her as a daughter, but moreso caring about her as a friend. It may be tricky!

Aged Care a Worry

My in laws stayed in their home for as long as possible with as much outside assistance as they were able to get. She was his carer. Unfortunately their nearest family was my SiL who live about an hours drive away.

Eventually, after MiL almost burned the house down using hot cooking oil, it was decided they needed more care than could be provided at home, so they moved into a home near us.  They were initially very resistant (him more than her) but after a short while they both settled in and enjoyed living there.

Late last year he passed away and it became apparent just how much she had actually been relying on him day to day. Getting from their room to the dining room, communicating with staff, etc. She has now been moved to the secure dementia unit and is deteriorating more and more every day.  M visits two or three times a week and always comes home very sad.

Jane, I so admire the work you and your colleagues do. It must be soul destroying nursing people you know are never going to get better.  I wish you were valued more by the wider community.

Anyone can ring ACAT and ask for a referal to anyone they know.
You might have to ring on her behalf due to her lowered self empowerment. It can be anonymous if you like.
Alternatively, you can visit your local community health centre and have a confidential chat with someone there about your friend's situation.

Sometimes need to wear our advocate boots in order to help our friends or family who are doing it tough but wont admit it openly, or ask for help, but where help is obviously needed.

Im happy to help in any way I can.

feel free to message me for 1:1 chat if anyone needs. Completely confidential.

I listened to this on Ray Hadley yesterday.....  It amazes me that our Govt doesnt see this as a absolute requirement.

Claiming it will cost the smaller Aged Care facilities so much added expence that they would risk closure is absolutley absurd!

I havent read your link yet, but I will when I have the time....

Our local member for Orange lost at Parliment this week too. He was trying to push the bill through. 35-48 defeat.

I guess we'll just have to keep trying..... and trying..... and trying.

going down this track at the moment, I cannot belive the amount of paperwork that needs completing.  The financial assesment that needs to be filled in for aged care is repetitious.  I have filled this in on behalf of my parents and even I was struggling.  Imagine a much older person tryngt to complete such a form.  It asks a number of times the same question, are you receiving a payment from the dept of human services?  How many times do you need to answer this in the one form?  Im half expecting the form to come back advising it was filled in incorrectly, wonder if anyone else has had this issue?

Also the transition care places, well some of them are just appalling.  The government needs to sink some money into these places, talk about depressing.
