I think the official announcement put out by Air Asia included a statement that the pilot asked for - and was given a different flight path because of bad weather.
edit: apparently he also radioed a request to ascend to a higher altitude for the same reason..

I don't have a link, Paints I saw it on ABC24 this afternoon. They showed the announcement on the screen during their coverage and a commentator read it out while it scrolled.

HHhhhhhmmmmmmmnn.....................no link huh?
all i have been able to find is:
"The plane, an Airbus A320-200, disappeared midway into the flight of more than two hours and no distress call was issued. "
from a reputable news site. Not posting link as apparently not necessary to verify source.

"The airline said the Airbus A320-200 was lost from the radar at 7.24am (local time), after asking to fly higher to avoid clouds."
.....is this same airline that 'lost' 2 planes during 2014- one plane still missing and many reports suspect terrorist situation &/or suggest that USA shot it down ?.....and the 2nd plane was shot down.......
..........riiiiiight.

By morning we should have about 5 different conspiracy theories in the newspapers, including
which pilot was sleeping with which stewardess
