Queensland criminologist Paul Wilson appears in Brisbane court on indecent dealing charges

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-03-24/criminologist-paul-wilson-faces-indecent-dealing-charges/53410...

I used to admire his work, but lost respect when he went to the defence of Corby many years ago.

Just like everyone else, unless he was involved, he can have no idea of her guilt or innocence. I wouldn't lose respect for anyone over that.

This charge though, is a different matter.

He had access to the people who did know.  He got involved for self-promotion.

I am sorry I mentioned that aspect, I didn't want to start an other Corby argument.

I remember the rumours at U of Q years ago about him.

I'm not meaning to excuse anything, but how old would he have been at the time.  In that photo he only looks around 60, which would mean he was around 20 back then.

He faces six charges of indecent treatment of girls under 17 years over incidents that allegedly occurred 40 years ago.

He is 73 years old.

What astounds me lately is that most indecent assault charges are being started many years after the alleged incident and after the men have become successful and whealthy. Why wait 40 years or more to accuse someone?

Being told to keep quiet about it by the perpetrator and overwhelming shame ( that they deserved it etc) . Some do tell an adult at the time but no one believes them.
Now if one person speaks out about someone who abused them in the past ( especially if they are well known and story hits the news), others who were also abused by the same person will come forward and say that happened to me too.

I am very surprised at your post, Erica.  It has nothing to do with money.  Just as the victims of institutions that are being examined now about their responses to abuse that happened up to fifty or more years ago need justice, so should individuals in families.  The same "shut up" message was given to them, and the same destruction of their lives occurred.  It is only in the last twenty years or so that is has become possible for some of these people to reveal their pain.  Others will never be able to.

He would have been in his 30s at the time of the alleged incidents.

People were told to shut up and keep the peace 40 years ago.

Many parents were intimidated in those days by those who were in"superior" positions.  People were trained to accept their "lot in life" and not to make waves. So many who did tell adults were accused of making up lies.

It sends a sign to the perpetrators also, doesn't matter how long ago you committed the abuse you can still be investigated and charged if guilty.

This is a more recent case - " Dr pleaded guilty in 2011 to more than 25 charges of assaulting patients at the Medical Centre, over a six month period in 2009. The charges included indecent assault and aggravated indecent assault.
He was then prosecuted by the Health Care Complaints Commission.

If the perpetrator is a person in authority ( teacher, scout leader, Dr, a police officer ) or a person well known the abused may think no one will believe me. Believe a Drs version or a 17 yo?
