Ants are eating my kitty's food

My kitties like to graze so I always have dry food in their bowls. But I keep finding ants in their food bowls and the cats won't touch their food. I thought about placing their bowls in trays of water but little Beau would freak out. He doesn't like new things.

Last night I followed the ant trail outside and sprayed the bejeezes out of the stone fence I saw them disappear into and I sprayed surface spray all along the outside of the house.

But this morning they are still eating my kittie's food! :_|

Where are they coming from?

The cats might smell the chemicals left behind by the ants. Spraying the ant trail with vinagar should work. I first discovered that when I was about 10 by squirting Massengill into a crack in the floor the ants were coming through. Nothing else worked.

I don't think I ever saw my father laugh that hard!

Ants will not cross a barrier of salt so that might be an option... you can also buy food bowls with little a little dip that you fill up and it acts like a moat to keep the ants away...

anything you do might freak the cat out for a while but hunger will over come his fear...

Ants don't like powder ... you can surround the cat bowls with something like unperfumed talc or plain flour and that will create a barrier they won't want to cross.  Or, maybe you could get a shallow box, cover the bottom with flour and then put the bowls in that.

Another thing is to track where they entering the house and use normal fly spray on the trails.

Here are some other ideas:

Ants tend to have 'nests'. It could be a hole in the ground or in a tree trunk or anywhere. I had a big problem at my house a couple of years ago. So I used Ant Gel, or something similar that says it will kill their nest. You put it in their trail and they take it back to the nest and it kills them all. If you just spray them you are not killing all of the other ants in the nest, just the ones you can see.

When I first moved into my new house I had an ant problem, I went and bought ant bates, I don't know what they are called but they are a small white version of the cockroach ones.  The ants go into them eat the bate and take it back to the nest this then kills the nest.

I have not had a problem inside since and I have 2 cats that have biscuits left in their bowls with no sign of ants.  I am not sure what ants you are getting mine were very small ones but I am sure the bates will work for any ant

I need to replace them so I will let you know what they are called and where I get them from, I am pretty sure it was from c or w supermarket.  Sorry not sure if I allowed to mention the supermarket names.
