We have a weird thing happening at our place atm.
Our telephone and internet is accessed through a *splitter* box type thingy that connects into the telephone wall socket.
Our phone went *out of service* on Friday, but yet we still have full internet service. ADSL2.
We tried plugging the phone line direct into the wall socket - nothing.
We tried connecting another phone - nothing
We don't get a dial tone, what it sounds like is that the line is open, kind of like a shssshhhhhhhing sound.
We are with DODo, they don't know what it is but we are not on the 2wk waiting list for it to be *investigated* (sigh!)
If we use our mobile to ring our landline, we can hear it ring from the mobile, but not actually ringing on the receiving end!
Too weird!
can anybody here shed me any light?
I hate not having a phone, as our mobile coverage here is very low, not reliable for making a call 😞

We have been with them for a few months now. They have been great, but since they rent their use of the Telstra line, any repairing is a waiting list...that's why their costs are down.
other than that, I have had great customer service with them.

Janeababe, I had what sounds like exactly the same thing happen at my place in the northern Adelaide suburbs a couple of weeks ago. I'm with iinet (AAPT) and was told it would be up to 2 weeks. I asked them to revisit this, as my elderly mum lives next door and was also affected, and I was going away the next day for 10 days and didn't want her without a phone.
They rang me back a few hours later, it was actually a line problem, Telstra were onto it and it was fixed the next day.
Hope you have a similar experience!!
Precious :-x

Jane,I'm with Optus & had exact same problem-just one of many :_|
Anyway, what the tech guy said was that it was a problem in the junction ? box ie some idiot had melted something (can't remember what it was called) & the metal drips had gone onto my line.He said it was amazing I had internet access & even more 'amazing' that the person didn't see what was clearly visible to him.
Oh & I only had to wait about 48hrs maximum & no special circumstances, that is just standard apparently.

Yep same thing happened here, it was a Telstra problem. The simplified version is your phone line needs two wires coming in but your adsl can run on one only. Your second wire is probably stuffed.

Unfortunately the terms and conditions of your service with dodo, include up to a 2 week wait for repairs of any faults in your line.
Other providers also use Telstra lines, but they don't have a long wait period like that.

Our phone line was crap before we got the NBN.
It regularly behaved as you described.
Now I use VoIP for all landline calls and never have any issues like I did with the old phone line.

well, seems as though it could be quite common then, although I have never experienced it before.
Thanx folks.
will just have to wait until its fixed now. B-)
