Any Land Line Telephone experts here?

We have a weird thing happening at our place atm.

Our telephone and internet is accessed through a *splitter* box type thingy that connects into the telephone wall socket.
Our phone went *out of service* on Friday, but yet we still have full internet service. ADSL2.

We tried plugging the phone line direct into the wall socket - nothing.

We tried connecting another phone - nothing

We don't get a dial tone, what it sounds like is that the line is open, kind of like a shssshhhhhhhing sound.

We are with DODo, they don't know what it is but we are not on the 2wk waiting list for it to be *investigated*  (sigh!)

If we use our mobile to ring our landline, we can hear it ring from the mobile, but not actually ringing on the receiving end!

Too weird!

can anybody here shed me any light?

I hate not having a phone, as our mobile coverage here is very low, not reliable for making a call 😞

At a distance it is hard to diagnose.

With Internet being OK and "noise" on your phone I would immediately suspect  the ADSL splitter filter. This unit splits the telephone line signal into a high one for Internet stuff, and a low one for the telephone. Plugging directly into a wall socket will be of no help, you need the filter/splitter, and connections to it to be the right way round. (make sure all other phones and connections in house are unplugged when checking)  Try your filter in a friends house. Next check would require a couple of instruments though, so I stop here.

PS

Even with phone just shshhhhhhing try dialing  12722123 which tells you the number you are calling from, and is thus a check of  whether out/back is working.

I used to build telephone exchanges.

I believe you are still connected to the exchange - the side tone or shhh noise indicates this. I believe something has happened in the exchange so you will have to wait for it to be looked into.

But I have no experience with ADSL, so try what John suggested first.

i left dodo because their service sucked.

Im with iinet now.

I do have internet problems buts it all to do with telstra lines problems and telstra wont fix it. My phone and internet cut out if we get a lot of rain and my internet cuts out when my phone rings.

Apparently my lines need replacing but they wont do it as its not my areas turn yet

I had ADSL drop out's recently, plus static on the phone line, after many calls and complaints I contacted the TIO who gave them 10 days to have my complaint fixed. They sent me out a new modem, still didn't fix the problem.

A Technician was sent out, he done several tests then came to the conclusion the fault was with my phone cable into the wall socket, but *grin* out of the kindess of his heart he decided the wall socket owned by Telstra was old and needed replacing. The ADSL came back up straight away, he then told me unless I replaced my phone cable it would continue to drop out. He also told me it would cost me $120 for his call out because the fault was with my equipment.

Well shock horror, we didn't replace the phone cable and it's been a week and no drop out's.

So be aware these technician will try and put it over you.

Tried ringing that number.... it did nothing, still just getting the ssshhhhssssing sound. like bad static and the line being open.

We are limited to Telephone servers here, so its either Dodo, Telstra or Optus! We got rid of Telstra and went with DODO.  All good till now, and even still, cant really complain.

Also, John, re taking my splitter box to someone else's house, unfortunately, We seem to be the dinosaurs because we still use a computer to access the internet and not our mobiles!  *sigh* ...ahh technology! I tried plugging the house phone into the other wall socket, but nothing changed.

I will just wait for the Technician.
cheers  🙂
