Arent the people smugglers Indonesian? Surely they should be taking responsibility for their own criminals.

No, they are from lots of different places and it is Australians paying them money in a lot of cases.
somalia, sudan, pakistan, afghanistan iraq to name a few...........
So none of the people smugglers are indonesians and despite the fact that they are committing a crime in indonesia, its ok that the Indonesians not only dont care, but dont want them back to deal with them?

It seems that as long as they are only "passing through" indonesia and are on their way here, the indonesiasian dont mind if they are committing crimes in their country. Lucky for them they are only smuggling people and not marijuana.
Some are locked in jails but there is a lot of corruption in Indonesia and they pay off the guards at times.
