Unions, lawyers, police  ... all fair game for criticism UNTIL YOU NEED THEM.  

I worked as an organiser for a union.  I can't remember how many people rang up and said "I'm not a member, but I'm in big trouble, can you help me?".  I never had one of them resign afterwards, either.  

I never met a non-member who wanted to refuse a pay rise that was negotiated by a union.

I never met a non-member who wanted to complain about improvements to health and safety issues negotiated by a union.  

Sure, there are problems with some unions ... just like there are with some big corporations ... have we all heard about phone hacking and News Limited?  

Totally agree....been there done that myself.....I started with Trade Union Training Centre when it first opened ....It was our job to teach union shop stewards to negotiate....& they were only too pleased to learn how to talk in 'employer speak'..... ;-).  Not everything about People Uniting in a Common cause is socialism or communism.....Sometimes it's just the majority demanding a 'FAIR GO'.  JMO

Too bad we've forgotten how....maybe this is why our Pollies are such egomaniacs these days....??

TUTA ... I went on one or two courses there.  Had a funny experience with the TDubs ... they were coming in for a course as we were leaving.  One of them asked me "So, I know your involved with a union, since you are here, but what do you do?" ... I said "I'm an organiser".  He said:  "A lady organiser?".

Isn't anyone going to attempt to enlighten us as to the workings of a union and that should include the reason for the union to get involved.

Are the motive altruistic or for financial gain and power to control?
