Asylum seeker handouts scrapped: Australian taxpayers to save $25 million a Year

Long over due and the only people that will be crying is the lawyers that were bleeding the system  and the bleeding heart lefties..

Why should our tax  money pay for illegals with no papers to rort the system

Well done Scott Morrision

TAXPAYERS will save $25 million a year after the Abbott government today scraps free immigration assistance to asylum seekers.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison last night said Australia’s protection obligations did not extend to providing free immigration help to those who arrived in Australia illegally.

He said, as promised before the election, that from today, people who arrived illegally by boat or air would no longer be helped through the Immigration Advice and Application Assistance Scheme.

But he said the withdrawal of the taxpayer help would not prevent people receiving legal assistance, saying those who wished to provide immigration advice and application assistance pro bono were free to do so.

The government continues to roll out its Operation Sovereign Borders suite of policies after notching at the weekend 100 days without a successful people smuggling venture making it to Australia. The government expects the withdrawal of the free assistance will save the budget $100 million over four years

If people choose to violate how Australia chooses to run our refugee and humanitarian program, they should not presume upon the support and assistance that is provided to those who seek to come the right way, and they should certainly not receive additional assistance, as they did under the previous government,’’ Mr Morrison said.

‘‘Services that have commenced will be completed, but the IAAAS will not continue for any additional part of the process that would incur an additional fee

Iza, our government has reportedly told mental health workers in offshore processing centres to accept a 40% pay cut.

This thread is about the removal of legal aid from asylum seekers who enable the trade of people smugglers.

This decision is not about all asylum seekers, only those who engage in and encourage a practise that the majority of Australians want abolished and that our government has announced it will not support either.

That's what I am discussing.

Thanks DH, I doubt many Australians support people smuggling. I know I don't.

There was another suicide attempt on manus this evening 😞

Hopefully, in time, there will be no need for facilities such as Manus Island. When people realize that we will not enable or tolerate people smuggling, they will hopefully stop doing so themselves, and as those already there are processed, then in theory, facilities such as those will empty.

I hope that day comes soon.

DH, as long as there are wars, economic failures, natural disasters, evil governments and bigotry, the world will have asylum seekers. We are a rich country and the intolerance displayed by Morisson's supporters is internationally shameful.

There are signs on the fences at manus that remind guards to always carry their knives. The knives are to cut down asylum seekers who hang themselves.

Re: Asylum seeker handouts scrapped: Australian taxpayers to save $25 million a Year

People are not opposed to people seeking asylum, only those who enable people smuggling.

That is what this thread is about, it is not about all those who seek asylum. and it is my understanding that it is only those people who do enable people smuggling who are housed off shore at facilities such as Manus Island.

As I said, I hope that in time word will spread and people will learn and respect our stance on people smugglers and those who enable it. When this happens, off shore facilities will eventually empty as those already there will be processed and no more wil arrive.

I am not ashamed of being intolerant of people smugglers or those who enable it.

Being intolerant of asylum seekers that have no other option is slightly inhumane.  I don't feel that way.

How fortunate it is then, that those asylum seekers who choose to enable people smugglers have other options then, eh?

That's interesting, Iza.

I wonder whether supporters of this cruel policy ever think of the kids. Did you know they have no access to education? Years and years in detention, their basic rights not being met.

Also, detaining kids like we do, breaches law. How shameful for our country.

There are children in Australia who are denied access to education.

Why make the continual comparisons? Do you believe that if we cut from everything to do with non Australians then we will all get free legal, universal free education for everyone? and a bucket of gold? What children in particular?
