I think there is a new "religion" - nothing to do with God, it's based on an ignorance of Islam and from this ignorance sprouts a hatred of all things Islam.

Sorry, I must protest and strongly disagree.

I think rather that there is a growing public consciousness (in part even informed by our public discussions here) about what Islam is and what Islam stands for and what implications an increasing Muslim population means for Western democratic countries.

It's only a "phobia" if the fear is unreasonable, remember?

I appreciate and agree with much of what you say, Boris, about the political landscape in Australia, but I must take exception with you on this point.

My opposition to Islam is NOT based on ignorance, though I think that some peoples' willingness to accomodate islam in this country does stem from an ignorance of what Islam teaches.

I don't want to repeat myself again as I am sure you have already read my arguments on other threads.

If my arguments remain unconvincing, then I can only encourage you to read more so that you understand more about islam.

Read the Koran. read islamic thought/s on their various websites, but please don't accuse me or others of having a deficiency of understanding or an "ignorance".

By the way (be honest now) have you read the Koran or the Hadith or the Sunna? Do you know what they are without Googling the answer?

I ask this question honestly. How you answer it is a matter for your own conscience.

http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2014/09/23/explainer-what-sharia-law

this one says

Punishments are not enforced anywhere except in a handful of very conservative Muslim countries. The majority of Muslim countries do not enforce that kind of criminal law at all. And nobody is calling for it in Australia."

and

“And in the research that I’ve completed - in speaking to many of our Imams in Australia - when asking their views about the applications of Sharia in Australia, the first thing they often tell me is that as Muslims, we abide by the law of the land.”

Re: Asylum seekers

Debra. Your links will only show the article to a person who subscribes to that newspaper. It is paywalled. ugh.

(Still waiting for an answer from Boris . . .  How's that research coming along, by the way? 😉

Re: Asylum seekers

Re Shariah law.

If it is requested that Shariah be introduced here for the matter of settling civil issues such as inheritance or divorce settlements for instance, then Shariah is unnecessary because, if all parties concerned agree, then they can already settle these things amongst themselves, in a Shariah-compliant way, so long as no protest is raised by any party.

Shariah discriminates against women in favour of men in the instances above. Australian civil law protects an equality of rights for men and women in this country.

Who'd want to give that up? . . . .  oh . . . .
