The rapidly increasing number of overweight Australians has seen the country overtake Canada in the obesity rankings, with 28.3 percent of adults tipping the scales.
Australia is behind the United States, Mexico and New Zealand in the OECD's annual ‘Health at a Glance’ report.
Despite this, Australia ranks 18th when it comes to children being overweight, below the OECD average.
The OECD shows a negligible gender gap for obesity in Australia, while women in countries like Mexico, Chile, South Africa and Turkey are much more likely to be overweight.
India, Indonesia and China have the lowest rate of obesity in the OECD.
Australia is number one for fruit and vegetable consumption, while Finland, which has substantially fewer obese people, is at the bottom of the rankings.
Australia also has one of the lowest rates of smoking, with only 15 percent of people having a cigarette daily.
Life expectancy at birth in Australia is 82 years old, the seventh best in the OECD and two years higher than average.
Hmmm. I wish I'd read this before I had a slice of Christmas cake for my morning tea.

..it's the fluoride in the water -- the genetically modified food hiding behind lying labels -- the thousands of additives in almost all foods -- and Chemtrails spewing toxins into the air, which are responsible for people's unnatural weight gain. Oh, and let's not forget the irradiation game whereby supposedly 'fresh' fruits and vegetables are rendered as looking fit to eat when in fact most of them are two or more years old by the time they appear for sale in supermarkets
We are being poisoned, sickened and lied-to
paintsew would agree with you, I don't agree with most of the above though.
I think the following has lead to an increase in obesity:
Less home cooked food from unprocessed ingredients- takeaways, precooked meals in supermarkets are full of fat, sugar & salt.
Less active - people/children spend more time indoors in front of a computer or game console
Less home grown vege gardens than in decades past
Supermarkets - often have chips, chocolate, sweets, biscuits on special, in the last 6 months, often at 1/2 price. Encourages people to buy that junk when at full price they may not be able to afford it.
As a child in the 60's and beyond we didn't eat much food high in fat. Cakes, biscuits (homemade) & cecreams were not an 'everday' food. The only processed food we had was a small block of that awful yellow/orange highly processed cheese (which was kept in the cupboard.. lots of preservatives). Maybe it was a standby incase there wasn't any normal cheese in the house.

just read through the thread.
most, dont have an excuse, we all know it!
my meds are supposed to make me fat, I might not be my ideal weight atm.. [again] but Im not fat. I have a friend who is schizophrenic- his meds are supposed to make him fat. but, if we both exercise and watch what we eat= we will lose weight- just like anyone else.
Cancer meds- you have no choice, good call Freddy. thyroid problems are legitimate too.
but mostly, we are just fatties who over eat.

One more post.
I forgot to add, that people could possibly have greater success with weight loss, if their physiological/ psychological
problems are dealt with.
