Last June, Australia celebrated its 21st. No, not a birthday or coming of age, but the completion of its 21st consecutive year of economic growth. Yup, you heard right, 21 years. Of growth. 21.
While the rest of the world lurches from crisis to economic crisis, the land of Oz is powering ahead, enjoying an Aussie dollar at a record high, unemployment at near-record lows (5.4%) and basking in more sunshine than the rest of us can dream up. So what does its Labor government do? Attempt suicide.
Yesterday's "coup" against Australia's Labor prime minister Julia Gillard by Kevin Rudd, the man she herself beat for the prime ministership in 2010, was the third failed attempt of her mandate. In the past 10 years, the Australian Labor party has installed and dispatched five national leaders while its nemesis, the Liberal party, has tried four different leaders in just six years.

Our economy is in decline...no it is not
CommSec chief economist Craig James expected the economy to grow by more than three per cent, which meant the RBA had little reason to cut again.
He said despite the relatively soft December quarter, the Australian economy remained in good shape.
"Australia has a Goldilocks economy - not too hot, not too cold, in fact just about right," he said.

Our economy is in decline... that is the truth... the mining boom is well and truly over so the one thing that kept us going during the hard times will never be there again to keep us afloat.
I understand that mining is the industry that is always in the news. I understand that the mining industry pours millions into marketing itself as an indispensible part of our economy. I understand that the people running the industry are influential because they are rich. And I understand that people like Alan Jones are personally going to be affected when the his mining shares peak and start dropping some time in 2014.
So I can understand why anyone who doesn't know any better would assume that we are doomed because the mining industry is so unstable and will soon do it's slow drop down to reality.
BUT.
Mining only contributed 10% to our GDP in the last financial year.
As a comparison - Tourism contributed the same amount. Even our sad and sorry agriculture industry (with subsidiary industry figures included) contributed MORE than 10% to our GDP.
And whilst the mining boom has certainly affected the Western Australian government in a big way, the profit isn't a deal breaker for the rest of the country.
Its a bit like saying that the whole country would go bust after Sept 11 just because the tourists stopped flying to Sydney. Nope! The reality was that it had a major impact on NSW government revenue but only caused a minor ripple for the other states and for the nation as a whole.
I would also like to point out that thanks to the mining boom, the value of the Australian dollar has been over inflated and this has adversely affected other industries such as manufacturing and tourism.

Our economy is in decline... that is the truth...
And I meant to start my last post by saying. That is NOT the truth.
Certain sectors are in decline but we are stable as a nation.
But even if we were in a slight decline, we would still be in a FAR STRONGER position than most economies around the world.
There is no doom and gloom forecasted for Australia.

If our economy is so good then why do we have historically low interest rates????
Why are people being so cautious????
Why are areas experiencing 10% unemployment rates?????
Things looked great on paper before the GFC... then look at what happened....
We are not a third world country... we are not going bankrupt, our banks are safe and secure.... but that does not say that we are in a good position, it only says we are in a good position in comparison...
Where I live tourism is not thriving.... and we are a tourist destination... people cannot get work where once there was a guaranteed job...
You can throw around what ever you can grab from any organisation... I don't care... I gather my opinion from experience... from what I see and what I experience.... from what people I know experience....
maybe it is in big cities that things look great... but not everyone lives in a big city.... and if things do not change more and more people will have to move to big cities.. won't that be fun....

why ? in a nutshell its negativity from abbott and lies from those moronic hacks you read.
people believe that rubbish.. your post is proof of the negative effect he and the press have on business confidence and consumer confidence. he's a wrecking ball, no doubt about that.

Cat - you are taking pockets of information and using it to paint a gloomy picture. Someone else is doing the opposite While those in the know are painting a different picture altogether.
What happened 'on paper' after the GFC? Actually don't anser cause I can answer your question. Pretty much nothing happened on paper after the GFC. Sectors shifted a little but we remained stable. In fact, it was barely a hiccup on our GDP scale for the last 22 years.
You have to look at the bigger picture - as I said earlier tourim is in a slump thanks to the mining industry. Cause while the mining industry has helped grossly inflate the dollar, the tourists are staying away. They will come back when it is economical to travel here again. End of story.
I am not saying this to be disrespectful, but it is clear you gather your facts from experience. But what you personally experience is not what the country is experiencing. You losing your left shoe doesn't mean the rest of the country loses it's left shoe too.

No, not everyone live in big cities, just as they don't all live in your area.
You recently got a new job didn't you?
So really in your area things could be said to be looking up.
In this area we had huge redundancies over a couple of years. Old industries and old factories have closed, leaving many unemployed. We are also seeing new business growth as people find new markets and develop new businesses.
It's still a man's world though. The jobnet agent told me everyone had new jobs. She obviously didn't count the women as many of them did not have new jobs. They are not given the same priority in the job market as men are still seen as the bread winner and women are told to go find a man instead, or travel the country side chasing work from state to state.
