Australians don't know how lucky they are

Last June, Australia celebrated its 21st. No, not a birthday or coming of age, but the completion of its 21st consecutive year of economic growth. Yup, you heard right, 21 years. Of growth. 21.

While the rest of the world lurches from crisis to economic crisis, the land of Oz is powering ahead, enjoying an Aussie dollar at a record high, unemployment at near-record lows (5.4%) and basking in more sunshine than the rest of us can dream up. So what does its Labor government do? Attempt suicide.

Yesterday's "coup" against Australia's Labor prime minister Julia Gillard by Kevin Rudd, the man she herself beat for the prime ministership in 2010, was the third failed attempt of her mandate. In the past 10 years, the Australian Labor party has installed and dispatched five national leaders while its nemesis, the Liberal party, has tried four different leaders in just six years.

It's still a man's world though. The jobnet agent told me everyone had new jobs. She obviously didn't count the women as many of them did not have new jobs. They are not given the same priority in the job market as men are still seen as the bread winner and women are told to go find a man instead, or travel the country side chasing work from state to state.

Unfortunately I have to agree with you there... particularly if you are regional or rural..

women belong making beds and washing dishes as far as a lot of jobnetworks see.

All this  'woe is us' reminds me of a conversation I had many years ago with a bloke who was fed up with hearing 'whinging Poms going on about how tough life was during the war. "It wasn't a game of skittles for us, either," he told me. "Tobacco was rationed and you could!'t buy or rollie papers anywhere."

Yes, while men get assistance to look for work interstate the women have to use their petty little newstart allowance to seek work in interstate.

While men get a lot of support retraining, the women are offered child care training or a class in how to apply make up.  Or the women can pick up a bit of casual hospitality cleaning jobs. There are plenty. don't complain about lack of employment when there are plenty of part time casual seasonal jobs out there.... bla bla bla!  Yeah right, if only it was easy to raise a family on that.

Most of the redundancy payments go to men also as they are permanent while many of the women are casual.
