Since we got a silent phone number, we dont get any charities ringing us, we are also on the do not call register.
When we got the silent number hubby requested we have a number that hasnt been used before......so we have peace!

get an answering machine, and let everything go to it. Tell your friends and family why you'll be using an answering machine and they should understand. I use an answering machine and my family know to speak and if I'm there I'll answer them.

Calling id?

Do you donate to them when they ring?
Tell them to save their money and stop calling you as you are sick of being inundated with calls every day, failing that get caller id or an answering machine.

Sadly we get the same - even those continuous - you have a bug in your computer type.
I usually see who is calling - make an excuse to go turn down the oven or something similar.
I return having vacuumed, cleaned the bathroom, watered the garden, washed the dog etc.
Rarely are they on the line anymore.

I monitor all my calls via the answering machine and if it's a wanting money call they never leave a message.

As soon as they announce themselves or I twig what they want I simply hang up.
Only once has one of them rung back. He said "I think we got cut off." I said "No we didn't." and hung up again.

Yes I am now at the hanging up stage too. Seems rude, but then again I pay the phone bill for my needs. I donate each year to the Children's Hospital, and the Red Cross (have been a collector in the past). I also buy the odd raffle ticket outside the supermarket if the cause is one I sympathise with. That is enough, and I refuse now to donate via telephone.
