Bill of Rights for Australia - What is your list of rights

Australia is the only western country without a Bill of Rights. Odd isn't it.

We need an entrenched Bill of Rights. It can be entrenched or unentrenched. Entrenched is better because it can't easily be repealed at will without a referendum.  I would prefer entrenched with a 90% vote required to change any aspect of it.

England has had once since 1689

New Zealand since 1990

United States since 1791

Canada since 1960

European Union since 2000

I think it is about time we have one!

Tell me what rights should we have as a people?

Please make a list, like the U.S. 1st amendment etc...

why the hell would you want a bill of rights, it makes it far to hard for a government to be able to govern to the conditions of the day, look how hard america hs it tring to deal with the right to bear arms, a government needs to be able to react to the ver changing conditions of the world a bill of rights can create a road block especially if the bill of rights is poorly writen

A Bill of Rights will impose stricter conditions for governments to govern but that is a good thing not a bad one. Without a Bill of Rights laws can be repealed and new ones made at will. We need something fundamental and needs to last forever so it can't change every time a different government is voted in. We need something written into the constitution which cannot be repealed.

As for the right to bear arms I think we should have it here. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. I believe we should have the same rights. At Port Arthur if people were armed someone would have stopped him. Look at the bikie gangs, police did several raids yesterday and found guns. The outlaws have guns. Law abiding citizens do not. If you have a clean record you should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon for self-defence.

i could not disagree more , laws have to be able to be changed easily  otherwise they could be stuck in an era no longer relivant , had we had a bill of rights set in place from federation the rights for women and aborignals to vote may not have been acheivable or jump forward the removal of gay relationships as a criminal offence may have been imposible to remove from law, we may still have a white australia policy a bill of rights can just as easily stifle rights as it can protect them, the fact that here in Australia we can change our laws to adapt to the changes around us is one of the graetest assets this country has.

We are missing out on many things. There is no protection. We have to rely on government.
