Pre election Abbott considered this his number on priority. Day after day, the Labor government was pummelled on all sides about the issue. Those seeking asylum were demonised and the Australian people were made to feel unsafe in their own country because of "illegals" that had to be stopped. Abbott had not just one but 3 different 'policies' in place to deal with the catastrophe that was occuring in this country.
But now that he is in charge, the issue is only a "passing irritant".

Anyway, whichever way you look at this, it is illegal to enter a country without authorisation. In the context of refugees, the UNHCR states the refugees need to show good cause for their illegal entry. Its really not that difficult to understand.

3 word slogan - Stop the boats.
That means stop the boats heading to and arriving in Australia.
A 'couple of hundred' boat people have arrived in Aust, since TA was invested as Prime Minister. 80 more boat people arrived recently... all in one month or less.
How is he going to twist his way out of that one.. when is he going to 'stop the boats'?

Which part of the Immigration Act do you think that they may be able to interpret differently?

The question was..(to newstart mainly). Would you like Indonesia to be an enemy of Australia, as he/she doesn't seem to care if that eventuated or had they even considered that could happen?
Who is doing the demanding?

Alexander Downer needs to hop back in his cage, he is not the Minister of Foreign affairs any longer, and hasn't been for some time.

amend , fiddle. its been read a few different ways depending on high court appts too. it can't be cut and dried if the governments own legal advice says 'we can do this' and the court says 'no you cant' as has happened during gillards term. so, the only route is an amendment to the legislation.

Illegal boats, illegal immigrants or simply illegals: it's terminology the Federal Opposition uses regularly but experts in refugee law says such descriptions are deliberate misrepresentations.

The following is an article from Politifact.
I don't know if they are a legit source or not, but I did think they made some interesting points in this article.
Happy to be told I'm wrong if it's dodgy,
Asylum seekers arriving by boat are illegally entering Australia.
