What is the Govt doing, apart from training & education intitiatives to create employment for this group?
There are 257 000 unemployed youth in Australia.
Our local TAFES have had cuts and less courses available. The unemployed youth in this area is the 2nd highest in NSW.

well not cut totally.....
And apprentices. Doesnโt this government love them as well? Sorry, guys, nearly $1bn is cut by ending the โtools for tradeโ program. Instead we have the establishment of the industry skills fund that gets $476m over four years.
Referrals to the Australian Apprenticeships Access Program will end 30 June 2014.
There will be no new entrants to the program from 1 July 2014. Existing participants can remain in the program until 30 June 2015.

You should be teaching your child to look for a job throughout their uni experience.
They should not start their search at the END of their degree but thoughout their degree. It is hard to get a job and they should be under no illusion that a Uni degree is guarenteed to open a door.

welcome chameleon:)
Yes I agree. What these idiot blinkered pollies don't realise is that out here in the real world hours ARE being cut back by the big national stores-everywhere, ALL workers permanents, casuals part-timers-they are all getting hours cut back. I know 3 ladies who work locally. They are fulltimers. One has had her fultime shifts cut down to 11 hours /wk. A gap year youngster was only getting 4 hours per week so she works at 2 diff stores, petrol expenses added, and battles to get 15 hrs/wk.
This is not a political argument at all it about basic rights.
This govt is aiming to severely disadvantage these young people/this age bracket-all so they can say that they have saved for a rainy day. Nothing more than economic abuse IMO.
The minor parties in the senate will fight this proposal no doubt, then if after 3 go's we get a double dissolution, we will just have to hope that Sir Peter Cosgrove, Gov Gen of Australia is sensible in his final decision.

I just want to point out that I don't think that our young people should be put at risk and they do need help... I have also contacted my local MP to make sure he knows what I think of six months without money and that if it happened to me I would be homeless and have said that I want him to fight for our local kids that don't have many job opportunities....
BUT I have looked into the whole proposal and overall it looks pretty similar to what we have now and not as dramatic as being portrayed in the media.

If you have a job that is only giving 4 hours a week, does that count as unemployed? Or is that employed?
you wouldn't be in the unemployment stats, there is a huge amount of under employed.

Is that a quoted policy? I find the word 'actually' offensive. To me it implies that they sit back waiting for jobs to fall into their laps while all the young people I know actively search for work, ideally in the field of their qualification, but any work if not.

I have also looked into it and it has changed dramatically......not similar at all, which by the way it is already extremely difficult to get newstart, not a case of turning up and getting the dole because there is no job available.
The maximum waiting period is six months in duration and the minimum is one month. The maximum waiting period can be reduced by one month for each year the young person has been in full-time paid employment, until the one month minimum waiting period is reached. Part-time and casual employment would be pro-rated accordingly. Job seekers will be required to provide evidence of their previous paid work to allow the Department of Human Services (department) to determine the duration of the initial working period.
Following the waiting period, income support will be available for six months in a 12 month period, dependent on the recipient participating in Work for the Dole for at least 25 hours per week.

no you are incorrect. It is not'similar' to what is in place at present.
Go and ask a young person working behind the checkout.
