What's embarrassing is that we were probably gathering this information partly in order to share it with the US intelligence service.

Julie Bishop visited the USA just after this spy scandal story broke and had talks with John Kerry the US Secretary of State.

I just bet the conversation went something along the lines of . . . "geez John we're in the poo. What do you want us to do about it?"

Bishop insists her private conversations with Indonesian officials convince her that the Coalition "can work in co-operation with Indonesia to achieve our policy aim" of turning back people smugglers boats. "Professional diplomats are paid to put particular views, but what goes on behind the scenes can be quite different," she says cryptically.
