I was unaware they had to be visible as well?
We see them in unmarked cars in Qld, more so than marked ones.
The only think that annoys me is the sign AFTER the visible car with the speed camera that tells you it is there. Why bother?

Here in Victoria speed camera cars had to visible at all times and a certain distance from the road. I personally don't have a problem with them hiding, if I am stupid enough to be speeding I deserve to be caught

radars either hand held or camera can not be used within 100m of a speed limit change, at the bottom of a step descent , on a corner
under or close to a large met object including light pole bus shelter or fence, must be set at a particular angle to the road, and quite a few more restrictions on their use. the problem is to cahalnge the tickets you have to go to coiurt & who can afford that

I was TOTALY unaware that eastern states police had to be visible?
NSW - I am not to sure about that, usually by the time you see them, if you are speeding, it is too late to slow down (they may be parked after a bend in the road).

New rules in Vic?
The new rules - effective immediately - permit mobile speed cameras to be hidden behind trees, bushes, posts and road signs to lessen the risk of harm to camera operators from angry motorists.
They also allow them to be used at the bottom of hills and on slopes if the "road safety objective" can't be achieved at an alternative location.
"There is no restriction from a technical, legislative or enforcement perspective on a mobile road safety camera being operated on a slope, hill or gradient," the new rules say.
