Re: costco fees.
I get a rebate from both Costco, and my CC that I use at the store. Both checks are more than the annual fee. Since I pay my CC in full each month, I'm not only saving money by shopping at costco, I'm getting at least $100 back from Costco every year.
Costco is no longer going to be affiliated with AMerican express though. So, my rebates might change.

tcm - we do have Costco's but only in the major cities like Sydney. None near where I live at present.
There is a rule here that new pharmacies can't open in so many kilometres from an existing one and/or inside or near a supermarket. The Govt has just approved that rule to continue for the next 5 years.
Until that rule is abolished (several Commissions recommend that) we won't get good value on pharmacy products etc.
... I dont think that is right am*3,
Plenty of Malls have supermarkets and pharmacies under the same roof.
we have a new one just up the road from us that has been open about 20mths now. The Pharmacy is right across the doorway of Woolies.
In our main street, a New pharmacy is just 400m down the road from IGA, and one block away from Aldi.
Re Costco: Why anyone would pay $60 to have the privilage to shop in a store, is beyond me. Lucky for me, our closet one is in Canberra... a mere 3hrs drive away!
For a large family who live in close proximity to a costco or a workplace that buys a lot of their items it would be worth it. You get 2 cards for each membership so effectively 2 families can combine to use it. I wouldn't bother but I do love shopping there with family. I got the best coat ever from there for $34, which was worth the $34 plus the $60 joining fee. This is it's 4th winter, it's machine washable, waterproof and has the best hood ever on a coat. They have some of the best towels I've seen for the price and a few other good lines that I've not seen elsewhere. But, you do need to spend a lot there to warrant the membership fee.

Not worded quite right by me, jane. Supermarket's would jump at the chance to have their own pharmacies. Would be better for consumers price wise. I saw a sachet of remove 'dye run' powder in the Pharmacy for about $9... it's about $3 in a supermarket.
Abbott government extends pharmacy location rules for another five years
Rules that restrict new pharmacies from opening near existing pharmacies will be extended for another five years despite numerous government-commissioned reviews recommending they be abolished.
...Generally, a new pharmacy cannot be opened within a certain distance of an existing pharmacy, usually either 1.5 kilometres or 10 kilometres, depending on the area. These rules also ban pharmacies being placed either within or in a position directly accessible from a supermarket.

Did you not bother to read the rationale behind the membership fee immediately above your post? If a family can save $100 or more yearly, it is a good idea. Some folks have to commute from one city to the next for work..........saving 10-15 cents per gallon on gasoline at 15000 miles, that almost pays for the fee in itself.
I just have to do a 'joanie' here. I don't understand.
Your post makes no sense whatsoever to me.
Does Costco sell petrol (gas) over there? They don't here, as far as I know.
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
But even if they sold it here, it would be the same price as everybody else -
no savings to be had.
Cos there's no collusion here at all when it comes to petrol
Having said that - I see no need for you to post this - it sounded offensive

$60 membership is BS IMO

Yes, Costco does sell petrol in Aust.
Apparently they have it discounted for certain hours of the day.. which Woolies and Coles drop to. When Costco is closed (?) the others put their prices back up.
I will see if I can find the article I read that in recently.
I would pay $60 p.a. for a Costco membership... and I haven't even been to one. You can take family, friends in with you for no extra charge?
Costco and Aldi are proving good competition for the big two WW & Coles which can only be a good thing for consumers.

This isn't the article I read before, but gives the same picture.
http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/costco-canberra-petrol-station-opens-igniting-price-war-20141211-124o39.html
Dec 2014
The NRMA's regional director for the ACT Alan Evans said supermarket-aligned service stations could no longer treat Canberra motorists "like mugs" now that Costco had opened.
Last week the average petrol price in Canberra was 148.8 cents per litre and diesel was 150.3 cents per litre.
He said the "dramatic" price drop to 129 cents per litre was the lowest price in five years for Canberra.
"The NRMA has been fighting for more competition in the ACT because we knew that the ultimate result would be fairer prices for local motorists. Today, we have been vindicated," he said.
"The formula for the supermarket chains now is simple โ either you match these competitive prices or you'll be out of business in no time at all."

Yes, the Canberra one has a servo. It was built after the main part of the store. Don't know if they all do.
When Costco opened their tyres didn't seem to be any cheaper than they were at other tyre shops but they did have a massive shop to wander round or have coffee and lunch in while you wait.

I manage to spend about $XXX a month at costco. We get our Gas, food, pharmacy, and some odds and ends there.
I got a really nice tv for about 1/2 the price of TV's at other stores.
I get two rebate checks from them between $50 to $150 each, every year. The fee to join is refunded with the rebates.
The answer is yes, you can take all of your friends to shop with you. They will have to pay cash for their goods though. Costco only takes Cash, American Express(until March '16), or a debit card. You must show the card to enter the store, and to check out.
Walmart isn't nearly as entertaining as the videos shown on the net. If those type of people really shopped there, I'd go more often to see the show.
I'm only about 5 miles(about 8ishkm?) from Costco. I'm not spending tons of money on gasoline to go there. The Walmart store is about 1/2 mile from Costco. LOL.

Gas/petrol is about a penny to .25 cheaper(per gallon) at costco.
3.78 liters to a gallon.
At the top range, you could save about $3.75 per tank. At the low range, You could save about 15 cents.
