2013 was a big year for ice with global sea ice hitting or nearing record highs.

A dramatic example caught the attention of the world Christmas morning, when a vessel hired by group of global warming scientists radioed for help after becoming trapped in ice off Antarctica. 

The Russian m/v Akademik Shokalskiy has 74 researchers and crew aboard and they managed to celebrate Christmas despite their frozen predicament.

Chris Turney, who is a professor of climate change at the University of New South Wales, is the leader of the  expedition He posted a video to Youtube optimistically predicting that Snow Dragon would reach his position within a few hours, but the ice breaker was forced to turn back. - 

Other vessels are headed to the scene and  Snow Dragon is waiting and hoping that high winds will push aside some of the ten foot thick ice enabling it to reach the trapped researchers.

The waters around Antarctica experienced remarkable sea ice expansion in 2013 confounding the global warming ice narrative.

Global warming campaigners have been stymied by the lack of any temperature increase in the major temperature data sets since the nineties.   (but the alarmist here in Australia and on this forum continue with the scare campaign thats proving to be a huge LIE) 

They’ve tried to compensate by feeding the media a steady stream of “extreme weather” stories and with shrill claims about polar ice. 

However, historical and scientific data shows today’s weather to be normal. 

2013 was in fact particularly tame by many standards with no hurricanes making landfall in the U.S. and data on droughts, fires heat wave, floods, etc. all coming in at or below average.

The global warming campaign seized on northern sea ice in an attempt to find some evidence to show warming. 

Northern ice has had a few sparse years recently.  Al Gore told COP 15, the UN climate conference in Copenhagen, that the North Pole could be “completely ice free” within five to seven years. 

However, 2013 did not cooperate with that narrative either, as northern ice expanded over 50 percent above 2012 levels. 

Yachts and research vessels attempting to make news by transiting the Northwest Passage became trapped in the ice and their attempts had to be abandoned.  See, Gullible green sailors trapped in the Arctic. 

Likewise, alarmist claims about polar bears have run afoul of the facts as polar bear populations continue to expand and

thrive. - 

Climate scientists and pressure groups have enjoyed remarkable success at seeing their press statements about polar bears and polar ice reproduced by a compliant media without balance or question. 

The information age, however, has granted the public direct access to the unvarnished facts in unprecedented ways. 

Web services, such as CFACT’s Climate Depot and social media, publish the data the media ignores. 

Global warming hype can’t hold up under the scrutiny.

When the warming crowd attributes fluctuations in northern ice to human activity without basis, and then turns around and blames southern ice expansion on nature, the unbiased observer can’t help but but wonder whether nature is driving both.

Temperature records compiled by NASA, NOAA and the UK Met Office all show no global warming since the nineties, some cooling and very little warming before that. 

Climate computer models call for substantial warming which has not occurred.  Is the unbiased observer truly to conclude that while nature rules the south, summer northern sea ice will be no more because 2008, for example, was 0.4 degrees above average?  This is a classic case of a divorce between correlation and causation, and correlation is no longer looking very good.

Hysterical claims about polar ice are a propaganda talking point aimed to keep the global warming narrative flowing, absent any… well, global warming. 

The public continues to catch on. 

How long will the legacy media keep reprinting baseless warming claims, without critical examination, when they defy actual data? 

Will embarrassing images of yachts and research vessels trapped in ice, which failed to diminish as predicted, help snap the media out of it?

The Artic.... I am glad you mentioned the Artic.... The Artic is far more advanced in its defrost process ie. the amount of freshwater melt is much greater and therefore has made the water  less saline and is starting to override the effect that the saline infused sea ice once had.

The Artic Sea ice packs are becoming less saline each time they freeze... because the rate of glacial (freshwater) melt which means that as global warming increases the Sea water will refreeze at a slightly higher temperature....ergo ..(for a time anyways) more Winter Sea ice

The deep water layer Sea ice frontiers have retreated to the point where they have no longer the capacity to remain frozen which allows warmer water to circulate against the base of the artic land mass that increases land temperature more quickly than when it was frozen.

When the surrounding mean sea temperature more matches the rising artic water temperature... it will enhance the global temperature rise exponentially...... and the time period for noticeable climate change will shorten just as dramatically.....

and the Antartic will then follow the same defrosting procedure..........

Scientists have revealed plans to examine temperature changes in the Arctic Ocean after a long-term study found the Greenland Sea is warming 10 times faster than the global ocean.

Scientists from Germany's Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) analysed temperature data from the Greenland Sea between 1950 and 2010.

Their results show that during the past 30 years water temperatures between two kilometres deep and the ocean floor

have risen by 0.3 degrees Celsius.

Dr Raquel Somavilla Cabrillo, AWI scientist and lead author of the study, says researchers are surprised by the results.

"For a long time it was considered that the deep Arctic region was in a stationary state ...[but] much more than we thought is changing," she said.

"Because the changes in temperature are so fast - faster than the average of the rest of the ocean - then the contribution [to rising sea levels] is larger than expected for this region," she said.

"That is the reason that we have to look to the rest of the Arctic, because it may be similar, and then we will have to recalculate the contribution of the whole area."

Dr Somavilla says warmer water has been flowing from the Arctic Ocean into the Greenland Sea and the new research will focus on this area.

"It is suffering sea ice retreat, sea surface temperature is warming faster than in other areas, so the sensitivity is higher than in other places."

She says a deep water temperature increase of 0.3 degrees Celsius may sound like a small number, but it needs to be seen in relation to the large mass of water that has been warmed.

"The amount of heat accumulated within the lowest 1.5 kilometres in the abyssal Greenland Sea would warm the atmosphere above Europe by 4 degrees Celsius," she said.

"The Greenland Sea is just a small part of the global ocean.

However, the observed increase is 10 times higher than the temperature increase in the global ocean on average."

Temperature increases related to convection and inflow

Dr Somavilla says the rise in temperature is caused by the inflow of warmer water from the Arctic Ocean as well as the cessation of deep convection in the Greenland Sea.

"Until the early 1980s, the central Greenland Sea has been mixed from the top to the bottom by winter cooling at the surface making waters dense enough to reach to sea floor," she said.

"This transfer of cold water from the top to the bottom has not occurred in the last 30 years.

"After the '80s it seems that winter heat losses - how much heat is lost from the ocean to the atmosphere - has decreased.

"The waters at the surface are lighter during the wintertime than before. They don't reach the necessary density to reach the bottom of the Greenland Sea."

Water properties

The East Greenland Current  is composed of a mixture of three distinct water masses.

The water masses are Polar Water, Atlantic Water, and Deep Water.

These water masses can be clearly seen throughout the EGC's tract southward, however, the upper layer water masses do change some due to atmospheric interaction along with inflow from other water sources in the Nordic Seas.

The top 150 meters of the EGC is considered polar water and it is cold and low in salinity.

The lowness in salinity has a lot to do with freshwater run off from sea ice melting, river runoff, and Pacific water flux and it is cold due to air-sea interactions while in the Arctic.

Typical characteristics for the EGC Polar water are a temperature between 0 °C and –1.7 °C (e.g. freezing point of low-salinity sea water), and the salinity varies greatly from 30 psu (near the surface) to 34 psu at a 150 meter depth
