Can anyone explain the the balloons?

Why do we have different balloons on the boards?

Grey, red, solid colour or a white highlight, a little plus sign on the bottom right hand corner, a green tick? The only one I can understand is when a Moderator locks a thread.

Wonder how any posters are just as puzzled as I am?

How can the OP decide if an answer is correct?

If the OP knew the answer they wouldn't ask the question
