Now that it's ended I have to ask...... where did the picture come from? It's got to have a story behind it. Or is it just a fantasy picture?

It’s a shot (and publicity photo) from a 1916 Italian film called “Maciste alpino” known to English audiences as “The Warrior”.
I’ve seen (incorrect) references to this as a genuine war photo, even referencing the Alpini (ferocious Italian fighters, alpine corps), and even dating it as “ca. 1915” - which rather horrifies me as an example of how easily misinformation can proliferate.
The entire silent film with Italian text plates is on YouTube if you’re interested! It has some wonderful moments of comedy against such a dark dramatic background of WWI.
