Many Australians were wondering why Carlton the rabid racist, was allowed to continue his rants against the Jewish population for so long.
Section 18C of the act makes it unlawful anything that is reasonably likely to offend, insult, humiliate or intimated groups of people on the grounds of race, ethnicity or national origin.
The Herald’s editorial position supported the retention of 18C, and many columnists were also sympathetic to its cause.
So the Herald Sun backed the retention of 18c, a direct assault on free speech but it has now come home to roost for them. Poetic justice perhaps.

"complaint against The Sydney Morning Herald over its anti-Semitic cartoon and the accompanying article by former columnist, Mike Carlton."
Did you actually read the article by Mike Carlton? http://www.smh.com.au/comment/israels-rank-and-rotten-fruit-is-being-called-fascism-20140724-zwd2t.h...
It commented on what is happening in Gaza; nobody disputes that they are facts, if small minority of people can gag our journalists from commenting that would the real blow to our free speech.
The cartoon, had nothing to do with Mike; not his decision. If it was in "bad taste" as has been alleged, what is this then?

Oh for the love of God...

Resonably likely... give me a break...
Havent people heard the term sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me.
It's words people, it's not like he went and smaked a Jew in the face.
Wheres Joan Rivers when it comes to 18c. Oh thats right double standards..... again...

I agree, it's pathetic. since this thing with Mike Carlton. I've been having a look around twitter to see what's been going on and I'.m very at some of the accounts and racial abuse going on. (not from mike Carlton)
JDIF is something worth googling

I hate that sticks and stones saying because the constant name calling does hurt people, particularly if it goes on for prolonged periods.
As for Carlton, it will be interesting to see the result. For starters Israel is not an Australian citizen that is protected under this clause, nor was the article about Israeli people living in Australia.

I would think they haven't got a leg to stand on karliaJ. I'M sure that MC would have kept all his documentation ( & believe me, there's plenty of it) if anything he could bring action I would've thought. It will be interesting to see how it plays out, if the story is true that is.
that particular journo is also on twitter and not very credible IMO

I hate Twitter. I dont even have an account, up until this Mike Carlton thing I'd never even clicked into the pathetic site. And I wish I'd never clicked into it either. The filth on there. People should be ashamed of the images that are being shared ect.
Re Twitter: And as for that bloody awful picture with the child and decapitated head. And the only source for the un censored picture is a twitter account that has now been shut down....convieient. Since when do we rely on images from Twitter as a pretext for war. It makes me sick to the stomach.

18c, the piece that Abbott wanted to revise or remove but all the left, Greens and ethic minorities fought to keep it even though it's an appalling section and restricts freedom of speech in ALL catorgories. Carlton has become a victim of his own making.
Be careful what you all wished so hard for.

I agree Karli. It is overused.
But my post was more in reference to the wording of the section 18c. It sounds more like a way to zip people who are supposedly free to express their opinions.
