Does any one else pay bill with cash??

The cashier at the Doctors made a comment as so few people these day paid with cash.

Anaesthetist bill would be hefty. Is it safe for pensioners to be carrying large amounts of cash around?

It doesn't cost me anything extra to pay by electronic means, no bank fees at all.

I live in a Retirement Village with 40 Units. Peter and I are the only ones having computers. We tried to teach some neighbours, but they could not even remember how to turn the computer on. They were not really interested when we told them that mail from other countries is practically instnt and they don't have to wait two weeks to get an answer.

I suppose that most or all of them have some kind of Banking card, but none of them use it, because remembering their key numbers gives them trouble. So they go into the Bank to withdraw what money they need. One Teller told one lady if she knew that it cost her more for over the counter withdrawls than using the ATM. The lady told the Teller; "If nobody uses the over the counter service, you'll be out of a job."

When it comes to Telephone payments, it is also not so easy for a lot of people. First off all one is put on hold for a long time before getting through to the department they need. Hearing loss is also a problem, and mistakes have been made with giving account numbers.

Internet banking is quick and easy, but not eveyone has a computer, and there is always the threat that someone will hack into your account.

Yes, there is progress for the better, but changes do not happen overnight. I still prefer to pay cash for what I need. I don't even take my card with me when I go shopping, that way I don't get tempted to overspend.

It costs pensioners nothing to withdraw their money from a teller.

I have no cards, I am trying to simplify my life.

It is me who has to wait at the supermarket checkout while the customer before me farts around with one card which doesn't work, then has to scrummage in her bag for another.   The operator admits that cash customers sail through and are easier for them.

Not for telephone banking, it is an automated service.

I do understand some elderly people aren't able to or interested in using telephone or internet banking.

Another option is to have payments for utilitiy bills direct debited from their bank accounts, that way they don't have to physically pay them at all.

I really don't like the idea of elderly people carrying a lot of cash around.

polks - The operator admits that cash customers sail through and are easier for them.

I think it takes less time to pay with card via paypass/paywave now that it does to pay by cash. For cash payment operator has to enter details in the till, drawer opens, puts cash in, gets change out, hands change to customer. Waits for receipt to come out.

With paypass/paywave - customer taps their card, approved comes up quite quickly, end of transaction.. wait for receipt to come out.

It's not a lot of cash.  Our bills are small.

But I do worry when I see a frail very old person, usually a woman, sorting out her just withdrawn cash at a shelf inside the bank.  If someone with an evil intent was watching, it would be an easy job.

People that age should not have to use ATMs.  It is too hard for them.  In an ideal world, one of their children would be assisting them.

Sorry, that's not the reality.  That's what we were told when plastic first was invented, but it is not so.  It is the other way around.  It is me who waits with arms folded leaning on the opposite counter, waiting, waiting.

You can withdraw/deposit cash over the counter at my bank and it doesn't cost anything extra. I often deposit money with the teller ratther than stand on the street and put it in an ATM.

Not so many people live near their parents these days.

That's what I said.  It is free for pensioners.

That might be true for some, but the reality is that oldies are often ditched.
