Cataract surgery on Medicare?

Last time I had my eyes tested I was told I have cataracts in both eyes. I can't afford to pay for the surgery so I'll have to go on the waiting list.

How do I get on the waiting list?

Can OPSM give me a referral or do I need to see my GP?

How long is the waiting list? Will they do both eyes at the same time?

Hate to tell you this Cat, but remember a poster from here named Leggydeferal?

She had cataract surgery done on both eyes.

It didn't work.

She now has a Guide Dog.

No, when?

Both eyes at once?

It's been a few years now, maybe 3?

She came to stay with me just after her first op about 4 years ago I think? (she had to travel from her home to here for the op, they wouldn't do it where she lives)

Both her eyes were pretty crook, they did the worst one first, but it never stabilized and then the specialist wanted to wait until it was stabilized (as they didn't know if it was going to come good or not), but the system popped out her name and she was basically told, this is when you have to have the second op, take it or leave it.

From memory they were about 12 months apart?

It was a while ago, so not entirely sure, but they weren't done together. She did have to travel down here for both ops as well as appointments inbetween.

Since when does a hospital clerk tell a specialist that the operation must be done on that date when the patient isn't up to having surgery?

If the specialist does not want to operate on a person on a given date they move the person down the list by however many weeks they think they should wait.

My  mother had both cataracts done about 12 years ago and she only had a local then and it was about 3 or 4 weeks between first and second eye. Mum was told it would be about 12 months but it was only 11 months and that still seems to be the norm around here.

They don't even give you a bed in the public hospital, you sit in a chair to wait your turn and then you are in a chair after the surgery and then off home you go.

My local eye specialist practice has stopped bulk billing health care card holders and you are out of pocket after the medicare claim. (I am still being bulk billed but don't know for how much longer, but I do hope I start getting frequent flyer points or similar when I have to start putting up the cash to see the doctor)

Re: Cataract surgery on Medicare?

Forget the latest BS Bump lol.  My ex had one eye done this year.  He had the other one done in Thailand about two years ago but the latest one was severely bad and he had to pay out of his own pocket because he was starting a new job and it was a bit of a hurry.  It cost roughly $3000 all up with appointments etc.

It was day surgery.  They don't knock you out with a general anaesthetic and it is quite painless.  He can't figure out why he can't read without close up glasses but that's just an age thing.

Re: Cataract surgery on Medicare?

J*oonoo. WhenI had my pre op appointment last week they told me that I had a choice to have the second lens either to match the first one for long vision or have short vision. If I chose the matching long vision, which was recommended then I would need reading glasses. Since I am thoroughly fed up with being lopsided for the past year I went with the docs suggestion. I think that it is a personal choice.

Re: Cataract surgery on Medicare?

Dunno Bump. Catmad will remember more, she was a major support for her, living closer, all the way through it and up to when she got her Guide Dog. She helped her out heaps getting her to all her eye appointments and other places in town whilst it was all happenning and until she was adjusted and settled with her pup.

But I'm pretty sure it wasn't the hospital clerk saying anything, was the health care department.

I have no idea how any of that works. Just that she had to have the second op before her first was stable. As it was a huge decision and risk for her, so it was a major topic of discussion for quite a while.
