Cataract surgery on Medicare?

Last time I had my eyes tested I was told I have cataracts in both eyes. I can't afford to pay for the surgery so I'll have to go on the waiting list.

How do I get on the waiting list?

Can OPSM give me a referral or do I need to see my GP?

How long is the waiting list? Will they do both eyes at the same time?

Without a health care card you are out of luck. Check centrelink website to see if you are eligible for a HCC? You may be eligible?

If not, you might be better off health wise and in the long term by getting a bank loan and paying up front for the surgery.

Being on a public waiting list could mean years and years and years of waiting while your eyes get worse and you get older.

Cataract surgery on Medicare?

I am due to have the second one done next week in public hospital.

I was on the waiting list for 12 months for first one and then 11 months for the second one.

I was charged fees for specialist consultation before op and two weeks after, but almost all of it was covered on medicare.

No hospital fees at all.

It is the best thing that I have ever done. I will be glad when the second one is done though as I have been lopsided for the past 11 months.

You (and everyone) has a choice to go private or public.

Private wil mean you pay for everything and if you have private insurance some or all of the hospital charges (not the initial specialist visit or pre-tests) will be covered by that insurance. Health insurance is really hospital insurance, except for a few extras like dental and glasses. ie doctor visits and tests that are conducted prior to hospitilisation are not covered by your insurance - it only covers whiel you are admitted to the hospital.

Both my parents have cataracts to varying degrees and both were assessed for surgery based on the severity of the cataracts.
My parents are seeing the same doctor and specialist - my mother has had both done, within about 4 months of diagnosis with about 8 weeks between each eye. My father was diagnosed within about 3 months of my mother and he is on a list but it is not a severe case and he still hasn't been done after 18 months. His specialist quoted him $1500 per eye out of pocket if he went private (my parents do not have insurance) but Dad decided against it as he doesn't feel it is effecting his eyesight yet.

Get a referral from your GP to an eye specialist and actively ask to be put on 'the list' ...sometimes doctors suggest you wait and see but if there is a wait i think you're better to be on the list and ready if you have to be.

And try to carry sunglasses with you all the time ...and ask for any other suggestions from the specialist to help you through the wait.

Oh - and mention everyway it effects you - just to emphasise you need to be on the list.

Good luck

Thank you sarafi 🙂

That was great information. I rang OPSM today and they explained they'll do another test tomorrow (no charge) then refer me to the Eye and Ear Hospital through the public system. I'll make sure I list everything - how sun glare and night headlights really affect my driving and how computer work can be difficult even with new glasses.

Jean everyone I speak to who has had the surgery say it was the best thing they have done, how they didn't realise how bad their vision was before the surgery. So happy it has worked well for you.

Ms. Mioux,

Just found the letter  I got from the Eye & Ear hospital after my specialist sent the referal to them.

The opening paragraph says, Weelcome to our out patient services, we have received the referal from your dr. We confirm that you are now on the waiting list.

*Waiting times will vary, depending on your condition, but may be several months*.

I am going to ring them as I have been on the list since 16/4/2012.

Will let you know what they say.....

That is a real shame.  I have never heard of anyone being less than delighted with cataract surgery.
