Catholic Baptism question

My Granddaughter is to be baptised at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney. As I am not a religious follower I would like to know if I am required to wear a hat and if trousers are ok or do I need to wear a skirt. My DIL said that it would be formal dress. In other words don,t let the side down. This woman knows her MIL 's poor dress style:^O

You could wear a mini skirt if you wanted, just presentable and tidy, no hat required.

I have no idea but I wouldn't wear trousers inside a Catholic Church anyway. You don't know what sin you would be committing!

I'd wear a frock. Ditch the hat.

Formal Dress? That would mean "Black Tie" event. That would mean long evening dress.

Sounds over the top.  Wear what you feel comfortable in. ๐Ÿ™‚

The only part of your post that makes sense is "I have no idea".

Thanks for the advice, I sort of didn't shape up for the wedding, so want to get it right this time. Although I don't think the baby will care at all.

I sometimes wonder if younger people think that formal dress just means don't wear your thongs.

For a Catholic baptism just wear smart clothing and trousers are fine.  Ditch the hat unless that is something that you like to wear.  Ask your daughter in law what she is wearing.  That will give you a better idea.

There's no religious requirement either to wear a hat or not wear trousers. I guess 'formal' means  the kind of outfit you might wear to a wedding. But as Joono said, take your cue from your daughter.

You can wear anything you like.  The only thing I can think of that would be inappropriate is for males to wear hats but even that is no longer observed.  I have seen boys wearing baseball caps.  Not unusual  in the northern beaches to rock up in board shorts on the way to catch a few gnarly breaks B-)

Baptism being a special occasion, it would probably be a good idea to wear something nice for the occasion.

I attended a Greek Orthodox Christening and was advised they do have a dress code and trousers for women were not appropriate.  No such thing in the Catholic Church.
