Sky News host Rita Panahi says “it’s hard to fathom” that while Australian women “enjoy unprecedented prosperity, opportunity and equality, there exists a subjugated subclass who are forced into taking part in devastating cultural practices”.
Data released in the past week revealed a sharp increase in the number of forced and child marriages in Australia.
Ms Panahi said terms like forced and child marriage did not reveal “the full horror inflicted on victims who are often subjected to terrible abuse”.
“Cultures where women are considered second-class citizens should not be allowed to implement their misogynistic practices in Australia,” she said.
“We cannot allow concerns about political correctness or cultural sensitivities to cloud our judgment.
“Forced marriages are the start of long-term abuse, with girls and women forced into a life of submission and humiliation.”
A very uncultured culture, IMO...

I would like to know the sources of the assertion, given who is reporting it.

I think it was Red Cross seeing an increase in assistance from child brides.

Regardless of whether or not they are 'forced' child marriages are ILLEGAL in Australia, and as far as I know there are no exmptions made on grounds of culture.
And a culture that endorses the concept that 'If you're fertile at 14 and you have a man to support you and your children...go for it.' ( Supermum Thread #5) would definitely qualify as "A very uncultured culture, IMO... "

She-el...we know that. That doesn't mean our law is respected above certain other "religious and "uncultured" cultural laws"

If you're referring to the Radfordf family, the union between the teenaged parents was neither arranged, nor forced.
All parties concerned cared enough about their baby to raise and care for it, and marriage was entered into with full consent and when both bride and groom were of legal marriageable age.

I wasn't referring to the Radford family. I was referring to comment you made in that thread regarding pregnant 14 year olds.

Either way, it's not about her, or my opinion of her, which is irrelevant.
Topic is about the rise of child marriages in Australia
It may of been inspired by the supermum expecting her 22nd child. but it was actually a comment on any pregnant 14 year old.
And in hindsight, perhaps your comment about uncultured culture was not altogether wise - it practically begged the obvious comparison.

The minimum age for a court appointed approval for marriage is 16 yo.
So, are these 'cultural' marriages of forced child brides not legal in Australian Law?
But just performed by their so called celebrant? Or whoever?
