'parental competence'
Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews is looking at ways to boost "parental competence" and make sure Australians adapt smoothly to key "life points" – from going to school to having children and retiring.
In an address to a national conference on families and relationships on Tuesday, Mr Andrews will talk of the importance of early intervention and prevention to avoid family breakups which he says increases the risks of child neglect and self-harm, and alcohol abuse and unwanted sex among young people.
The Social Services Minister has tasked his department with developing a framework to "embed" early intervention and prevention into social services' policies and programs

Didn't they claim they would be a 'small government'. And how come they are all experts on everything.

These comments are very telling. I suspect these may be future 'compliance' processes for anyone receiving family tax benefits, childcare rebates and any other form of welfare etc . In other words you will have to prove that you have sought assistance (probably from some place like his wife's counselling service), to prove you are a good parent. They really are scary with their paternalistic beliefs that they know what is best for everyone else.

As a backbencher, Andrews authored the Euthanasia Laws Bill 1996 to overrule Northern Territory legislation that legalised euthanasia (the Rights of the Terminally Ill Act 1995).
Andrews’ 2007 decision to cut Australia’s refugee intake from African nations was branded by some critics as “racist”, and pulling out the race card before the 2007 Australian Federal election. Andrews defended the decision, saying: “Some groups don’t seem to be settling and adjusting into the Australian way of life as quickly as we would hope.” Andrews accused Sudanese refugees of fighting in bars and congregating in parks to drink alcoholic beverages, but did not provide statistics to back up his claims.
Andrews is an advisor to the Board of Life Decisions International (LDI), a (non-denominational) religious pro-life group that is primarily concerned with opposing the pro-choice Planned Parenthood organisation. LDI campaigns for chastity, boycotts corporations and names individual celebrities who support abortion, euthanasia, or embryonic stem cell experimentation or who, in their opinion, support sexual promiscuity. These include GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson and Johnson, Time Warner and Disney.
Andrews made a speech to the Endeavour Forum on 9 April 2003, a group focusing on women’s issues, opposing abortion, equal opportunity and affirmative action.

Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews has cancelled a planned address to a controversial conference that endorses anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage messages.
The calls for me not to attend demonstrate the intolerance of the Greens and the Left - instead of arguing their case in the public arena they seek to shut down debate.

This person has the strange effect of making me want to swear every time he opens his mouth in public.
Who does he think he is to impose his views on the entire population of Australia? It's none of his business who wants to end their relationship. He and his mate's merry band of morons should jump in a time machine and return to the past because we sure as hell don't need him or them.

Same Kev Andrews supported John Howard's WORKCHOICES legislation and was one of its main stalWARTS for it.
IMO ?.....definitely not a person to be trusted in Government, with anyone under the age of .....dead, in the street, in a dark alley anywhere.

I have a relative who works in the department and they are hoping that he doesn't ask them to draw up the guidelines for his latest brain storm.
