Christmas Island

Thanks for posting this.Woman Sad

Since returning from Christmas Island, my friends from school often ask me about my experience while at the pub. "Are you still helping support those bomb throwers?" they ask, adding that refugees are " taking our jobs". I feel a strong burning inside each time, and want to scream at them for showing such ignorance. But instead I tell them the story about the guy from Somalia, or the boy from Afghanistan. And when they listen, they see what I see. I give them information and facts, and it makes them think. That’s all I ask of people when it comes to the asylum seeker issue: just think about it, read more about it. Don’t take for granted that the government is doing the best thing.

I am by no means naive enough to believe that every person I met is a genuine refugee. I have seen my fair share of people whose motivations I have questioned. But the huge majority of the asylum seekers I have interviewed have gone through horrific trauma and torture, and have fled or been driven out of their own country. They come here to save their children or themselves, only asking for safety.

I truly believe that most Australians would show much more compassion and understanding if they experienced what I have. I have never been ashamed to be Australian until I was thrown in this process. I have also never been so thankful to have won the lottery: to be born in this country, free from war and terror.

Thank you for posting the link to this story. I wish more people would read it and educate themselves about conditions in those countries the refugees come from.

Granted, not everyone is a genuine asylum seeker, but the majority are.

The slow process of assessing all those people is not the cause of rebellion and demands from the genuine refugees. They are patiently waiting their turn, as long as they are safe.

yes. tugs at ones heartstrings. no doubt.

why have they been disenfranchised from their own country?

If us white Aussie descendants from the enforced colonisation of Englands criminal deportment solution to the continent of "Terra Australis, and it's subsequent immigrant population of immigrant population of displaced persons of not one, but 2  European World Wars, hadn't built up this beautiful country to what it is today, where else would they go?

I would like these ppl to live in their own countries, in accordance with their own customs and religious beliefs, without persecution and deprivation.

Who is causing all this Global unrest?

Fanatics, Icy.

Mindless and greedy people that think they have the right to take what they want and spread hatred and destroy anyone that is against them. Unfortunately those fanatics always have followers, especially in  third world countries. All it needs is one man with a big mouth and the ability to preach convincingly to the uneducated and poor in their area.

No I think it's bigger than that Lind, It's the big (Soros et al) players that have the global finances in hand and can dictate to governments how to form their policies and place their loyalties and send their armed forces or else face economical sanctions and other political disenfranchisements.

Absolutely, Iza, and I'm sure the Brit convicts would have preferred to stay in their own county too, but who of those with no voice can prevail against global politics?
