Clive Palmer calls for clerk of Senate Rosemary Laing to resign
Billionaire politician Clive Palmer has called for the clerk of the Senate to resign unless she is able to maintain impartiality, following a staff email she wrote implying Mr Palmer was a bully.
A leaked internal email sent to Senate staff on Thursday, and obtained by Fairfax Media, reveals clerk of the Senate Rosemary Laing warned staff not to tolerate ''unacceptable behaviour'' and made reference to the ''conduct of a member of the House of Representatives''.
While the email does not directly name the MP, it was widely reported two weeks ago that there was an altercation between Dr Laing and Mr Palmer, the member for Fairfax, over amendments to the carbon tax repeal bill.
Mr Palmer, leader of the Palmer United Party, was annoyed that the clerk would not distribute amendments put up by one of his senators, Glenn Lazarus.
The clerk argued that the amendments were effectively a monetary bill and constitutionally could not originate in the Senate.
In her staff bulletin issued on Thursday, Dr Laing warned against what she described as workplace bullying.
''You all have the right to a safe workplace and that includes the right to step away from - and report - bullies, whatever their status,'' she wrote. ''None of you need have any contact with the member in question if you feel at all threatened or intimidated by him.''
Mr Palmer told Fairfax Media he did not raise his voice during the exchange and said he told the clerk: ''If you do not circulate this amendment by Senator Lazarus I will challenge [your] position in the High Court.''
But on Thursday Mr Palmer took that position further. ''Australian democracy is far more important than this issue. The clerk is supposed to be impartial; if she is not up to the job, resign,'' he said.
Fairfax Media approached Dr Laing's office for comment, but was told she is on leave. The deputy clerk of the Senate refused to comment on the matter.
In the email, Dr Laing also took a swipe at the behaviour of the press gallery over the past two weeks of Parliament, describing reports of the carbon tax repeal negotiations as ''unethical''.
''In all of my years here, I do not believe I have seen anything so unethical from the press as this … [including a] disgraceful episode of press gallery members eavesdropping on private negotiations in the corridors over the carbon tax repeal legislation and writing stories on that basis,'' she wrote.
Last week all the major parties and the crossbench in the Senate - except for the PUP and Motoring Enthusiast senator Ricky Muir - spoke in praise of the clerk.
President of the Senate Stephen Parry said: ''I have full confidence in the clerk of the Senate and her officers. All Senate staff serve the Senate in an entirely professional and impartial way and I reject any claims to the contrary.''

Palmer is a joke and a buffoon yet he seems more liked than the PM. Palmer talks a lot of tosh mixed with populist rubbish people want to hear . The PM does the same but it goes over like a lead balloon. The point is that yes palmer is less than ideal , but still preferable to the current lnp mob. All this tells us is how bad the LNP government is.

On Q&A last night, Mr Palmer likened the Chinese government to “mongrels” and called them “b*stards” who wanted to “take over our country”.
In a broad spray the maverick MP accused the “communist Chinese government” of trying to take over Australia’s ports to steal the nation’s natural resources. “I don’t mind standing up against the Chinese **bleep**s and stopping them from doing it,” he said on Q&A.
Yep kill our biggest trading partner..... 131 BILLION a year worth of trade between us and China..... Clive sure is not helping...
Penny Wong silent
Clive Palmer plays the race card as Labor’s Penny Wong, herself Chinese, sits by without a single protest or mention of 18C:

He said ... he’d keep up the fight against the “Chinese mongrels”.
“I’m saying that because they’re communist, because they shoot their own people, they haven’t got a justice system and they want to take over this country,” he said.
The Chinese “**bleep**s” Palmer refers to are in this case his own Chinese partners. The take-over of this country he denounces is the investment he himself sold them.
You didn't watch the show did you?

And what is it exactly that Wong was supposed to do?
She made it clear she thought he was being an idiot. The audience and the viewers at home were left in no doubt what she thought.
However I will point out that Warren Truss, who is in govt now DID not say a word at all even though HE is the one who should have opened HIS mouth and supported China on behalf of HIS govt. And if I recall correctly he was also the first speaker after Palmers tirade.
So your comment should have been:
Warren Truss silent!

Labor’s Penny Wong, herself Chinese, sits by without a single protest or mention of 18C:
Penny Wong was born in Malaysia to a Malaysian Chinese father and a European Australian mother. After her parents, Francis Wong and Jane Wong (née Chapman), separated, she moved to Adelaide, South Australia when she was eight years old with her mother and younger brother.
Tony Abbott was born in London, England to an Australian mother and English-born father who returned to Sydney in 1960.
So is she more Chinese than he is English?

The madness of Jacqui Lambie and PUP is making world headlines
'We can't let our grandchildren become slaves': Palmer United senator Jacqui Lambie says Australia needs to 'look into missiles' after warning against a 'Chinese communist invasion'
Controversial Senator Jacquie Lambie has followed up her bizarre warning against a 'Chinese Communist invasion' by insisting that Australia needs to significantly boost its military presence or else risk 'letting our grandchildren become slaves'.
Senator Lambie today issued a bizarre statement in defence of her Palmer United Party boss Clive Palmer, after he ranted about 'Chinese mongrels' and 'Chinese b***ards' on the ABC's Q&A program on Monday night.
Speaking to 2GB radio host Ben Fordham this afternoon, Senator Lambie repeated her stance on investment in national security, saying Australia should double the size of its military and 'look into missiles'.
'We should be looking into using missiles if another nation attacks us,' she told Fordham. 'We need to stop our grandchildren from becoming slaves to an anti-democratic power.
'We should be worried about any invasion, not just from communist China, and right now I am concerned about our national security.
'Anybody who is close to us and has the ability to reach our shores we need to make sure we can fight for our own country and have the defences to do that.'
Ms Lambie then claimed Australia should double its '$24 billion' annual spend on military - a figure Fordham was quick to correct - to $29.3 billion.
Earlier on Tuesday, Senator Lambie issued a press release backing comments made by Mr Palmer on the ABC last night about the Chinese government.
She said his comments were a 'timely warning and highlight the appalling national security and defence policy failings' of both the government and opposition.
'I don't normally respond to questions about Clive's business dispute with the Chinese company… However, I strongly support the general point that Clive made about Communist China's military capacity and threat to Australia,' she wrote in a statement.
'If anybody thinks that we should have a national security and defence policy, which ignores the threat of a Chinese Communist invasion – you're delusional and got rocks in your head. The Communist Chinese military capacity and level of threat to the western world democracies is at an unprecedented and historical high.'
Ms Lambie condemned, what she claimed were historically low rates of defence spending as a ratio of GDP, and said 'If there's one thing I've learnt after serving my country in the Australian Defence Force for 11 years and listening closely to our veterans, it's this: The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.'
She added the measures were necessary to 'stop our grandchildren from becoming slaves to an aggressive, anti-democratic, totalitarian foreign power'.

China's Great Wall of visa money
http://www.businessspectator.com.au/article/2014/2/5/china/chinas-great-wall-visa-money
New analysis from the real estate advisory arm of Korda Mentha has revealed that the government’s significant investment visa scheme is booming, with the number of approved visas growing exponentially in the second half of 2013.
As per the visa requirements, a “significant investor” is required to commit at least $5 million worth of investment to Australia. Off the Korda Mentha figures, this means that in 2013, the scheme brought in at least $440 million to the Australian economy - around $4 million per day.
The data follows Department of Immigration data released yesterday that revealed nine out of every ten SIV applicants are from the Chinese mainland. This suggests that 90 per cent of the estimated $440 million came from China.
There has been a significant spike in the number of SIV approvals since the Coalition government came into power last September. There were only 15 approvals in first eight months of 2013 under the Labor government. The number of approvals surged nearly 600 per cent in the first two months of the new government.
Korda Mentha data shows Victoria and NSW are the top two destinations for millionaire investors. Business Spectator understands the Victorian government has been proactive in approaching Chinese investors.
The bar graphs shown in this article show that NSW and VIC are main State targets and massive increases from LNP taking on leadership reins in 2013 til Dec 2013.....imagine what a more recent graph would show?!!
ONLY Commercial real estate, low volatility, income producing properties throughout Australia maybe the aim but how easy are the loopholes in this scheme for foreign investors AND Australians with vested interests to buy residential in lieu of...............................
............and WHO is MONITORING and policing this situation?......Hyper-inflated Australian home and residential prices IMO.

That's very much a minority view now .
