Clive Palmer calls for clerk of Senate Rosemary Laing to resign

Billionaire politician Clive Palmer has called for the clerk of the Senate to resign unless she is able to maintain impartiality, following a staff email she wrote implying Mr Palmer was a bully.

A leaked internal email sent to Senate staff on Thursday, and obtained by Fairfax Media, reveals clerk of the Senate Rosemary Laing warned staff not to tolerate ''unacceptable behaviour'' and made reference to the ''conduct of a member of the House of Representatives''.

While the email does not directly name the MP, it was widely reported two weeks ago that there was an altercation between Dr Laing and Mr Palmer, the member for Fairfax, over amendments to the carbon tax repeal bill.

Mr Palmer, leader of the Palmer United Party, was annoyed that the clerk would not distribute amendments put up by one of his senators, Glenn Lazarus.

The clerk argued that the amendments were effectively a monetary bill and constitutionally could not originate in the Senate.

In her staff bulletin issued on Thursday, Dr Laing warned against what she described as workplace bullying.

''You all have the right to a safe workplace and that includes the right to step away from - and report - bullies, whatever their status,'' she wrote. ''None of you need have any contact with the member in question if you feel at all threatened or intimidated by him.''

Mr Palmer told Fairfax Media he did not raise his voice during the exchange and said he told the clerk: ''If you do not circulate this amendment by Senator Lazarus I will challenge [your] position in the High Court.''

But on Thursday Mr Palmer took that position further. ''Australian democracy is far more important than this issue. The clerk is supposed to be impartial; if she is not up to the job, resign,'' he said.

Fairfax Media approached Dr Laing's office for comment, but was told she is on leave. The deputy clerk of the Senate refused to comment on the matter.

In the email, Dr Laing also took a swipe at the behaviour of the press gallery over the past two weeks of Parliament, describing reports of the carbon tax repeal negotiations as ''unethical''.

''In all of my years here, I do not believe I have seen anything so unethical from the press as this … [including a] disgraceful episode of press gallery members eavesdropping on private negotiations in the corridors over the carbon tax repeal legislation and writing stories on that basis,'' she wrote.

Last week all the major parties and the crossbench in the Senate - except for the PUP and Motoring Enthusiast senator Ricky Muir - spoke in praise of the clerk.

President of the Senate Stephen Parry said: ''I have full confidence in the clerk of the Senate and her officers. All Senate staff serve the Senate in an entirely professional and impartial way and I reject any claims to the contrary.''

I make my response referring to yours and this further link:

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/aug/20/clive-palmer-suffers-double-setback-in-court-battle-ove...

These cases are only findings in the Federal Court/s.Don't know what the circumstances were that led up to Mr Palmers' case that was heard in the Perth Federal Court only being entered to be heard by a single Judge-he may have been entitled to be heard by three.....I don't know but just saying.

It's not what happens in Court that is the problem....it's what goes on 'behind the scenes' that I have a problem with.
If Mr Palmer considers taking his matters further, onto the The Full Federal Court/s I hope he gets three or more Judges and has a successful outcome.

You can bet your billiard balls there is a lot more to this than the story our media is allowed to tell telling or for that matter 'knows' Smiley Wink

Clive Palmer party senator Glenn Lazarus caught plagiarising Wikipedia

http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/clive-palmer-party-senator-glenn-lazarus-caught-plagia...

The brick with eyes lives up to his name, thick as a brick.... but that seems to the prerequisite for the PUP party members...

CLIVE Palmer’s Senator for Queensland Glenn Lazarus has been raiding Wikipedia pages about Queensland to tell voters all about the state he is meant to represent.

A personal website for the Palmer United Party Senator plagiarises more than 450 words “about Queensland’’ from Wikipedia to tell voters about the state’s history, industries and attractions.

One of the few exceptions to the plagiarism was some additions made to add Mr Palmer’s Coolum resorts to the state’s list of glittering tourist attractions.

The revelations came as Senator Lazarus, who has dodged media questions and interviews since beginning his term, refused to comment on the party’s leader’s inflammatory remarks about China.

Senator Lazarus – who is paid an annual base salary approaching $200,000 to represent Queensland – refused yesterday to respond to questions about Australia’s economic future, his plans for the state and his colleagues’ remarks.

While the Senator – known during his rugby career as “the brick with eyes’’ – is happy to stand at the edges of Mr Palmer’s press conferences, he has rarely stepped up to the microphones himself to answer questions.

Media were allowed into one of his constituent sessions at Mr Palmer’s Fairfax Festival Weekend, but were booted from the second and journalists were not permitted to ask him questions during the session they were allowed to attend.

The rookie senator’s website reproduces almost 500 words exactly as they appear on Queensland’s Wikipedia page, and features an image of a whale that a Google image search reveals has been used previously by others.

Among the many examples of lifted content is the passage: “(Queensland’s) primary industries include: bananas, pineapples, peanuts, a wide variety of other tropical and temperate fruit and vegetables, grain crops, wineries, cattle raising, cotton, sugar cane, wool and a mining industry including bauxite, coal, silver, lead, zinc, gold, and copper.”

Lists of tourist attractions are also copied without alteration, with the exception of one line.

The Wikipedia version reads: “On the Sunshine Coast there is UnderWater World at Mooloolaba and Australia Zoo near Beerwah/Glass House Mountains, home of Steve Irwin until his death in 2006”.

Senator Lazarus’ version begins the same sentence with: “On the Sunshine Coast there is Palmersaurus and Motorama at Palmer Coolum, UnderWater World at Mooloolaba …”

A separate portion dealing with the history of the Legislative Assembly appears to have been taken from a state government website.

Meanwhile, parts of the website dealing with the Senate and the role of Senators appear to have been lifted – almost word-for-word – from Independent Senator Nick Xenophon’s official site, which in turn seem to have been based on text featured on the Parliamentary Education Office’s website.

Certain passages on Senator Xenophon’s site – which are often reworked versions of lines from the parliamentary website – appear on Senator Lazarus’ site with identical wording and punctuation.

Senator Xenophon said yesterday he was “flattered” to be of assistance but unconcerned by the apparent mimicry.

The Courier-Mail yesterday put a list of questions to Senator Lazarus dealing with a range of topics, including Mr Palmer and Senator Lambie’s controversial comments this week about China, the Budget and whether he believed a return to surplus was necessary.

No response was received, as was the case with questions relating to the alleged plagiarism on his website.

It is not clear whether Senator Lazarus himself or a staff member committed the plagiarism, given he refused to answer questions from The Courier Mail.

Text messages were also sent to Senator Lazarus alerting him to the queries, which were also emailed to a PUP media representative, an official PUP email and his personal parliamentary email address

Doesn't News Ltd know how to interpret 18c ? because neither palmer or carlton have breached it. bolt was prosecuted because of intent and innacuracies (mistakes and lies) as well as the fact that he went after someone in print for no reason other than to vilify them .

For all we know the writer who was employed to write for lazarus is the person who wrote the wiki entry.

The desperation is really setting in if you've got to attack, for the sake of attacking, the conservatives who have not yet bent over.
