Cost of living (Nov 2022)

I know that the cost of living has risen over the years, but sharply in the latter half of 2022, so I thought we could post helpful tips for easing these costs.

I don’t want this thread to become a blame game about who caused what to increase the cost of living, just hints to help those who may be struggling.

Post your suggestions here, or post your experiences if trying the suggestions.

Coles have a Flybuys reward scheme, but I know little about it except that Coles is affiliated with Flybuys.

When I shop at Coles and see the shopper in front of me scan their Flybuys card I normally ask them if they’d like to scan their card before my items are scanned.  That way they get the Flybuys points.

WW recently had their “Tableware” promotion.  For every $20 spend you got 1 tableware point.  There were ‘bonus’ available each week if you bought particular items.

When you had enough points for a tableware product you just picked the product off the promotion shelf and took it to a checkout and scanned your card and the product was yours.

Over the course of the promotion we managed to get 4 pasta dish rewards  (2 per box) meaning we got 8 new pasta bowls without buying stuff just to get the tableware points.

WW place a $40 value on the box of 2 pasta bowls, but I wouldn’t pay that much, I’d go to Kmart instead.

Coles have had these same sort of promotions based on what you spend.  From memory, they once had Jamie Oliver branded kitchen items.

If you are buying from a store that runs a promotion then it is worthwhile so long as you don’t buy stuff just to get promotion credits.  For the WW tableware promo 40 points for pasta bowls equates to $800 spent (without any bonus points).  No past bowls are worth $800 !

**this one won’t be for everyone, but it may help some members**

EQUIPMENT HIRE

If you are ever wanting to hire some equipment from a hire firm, ask what the weekday rate for hire is and then ask if you can pick it up just before close of business the day before you need it.  During Daylight Saving months, for those with DS, this will give better value for your hire as you could get almost a 1-1/2 days use of the hired equipment if you pickup at 5pm.

Alternately, if you need the hired gear for a big job, then ask what the rate is for both days of the weekend.  Also ask if you can pickup just before close of business on Friday and drop it off at opening time on Monday morning.  Definitely worth asking.

Here is an example using my last weekend’s efforts.

I have a lot of palms here at my place, LOTS.  Not talking about potted palms, these are tall!  I last trimmed them 2 years ago.  Back then I hired a trailer boom lift on a Wednesday and dropped it back on Thursday morning.  I had to trim back 10 years of dead fronds and it was hard work getting it all done in one day . . . so I decided then that I would trim them every 2 years.

I enquired about hiring a trailer boom lift from the same business I used 2 years ago.  The weekday rate is $260 a day, but the weekend rate is $200/day if you hire for both Sat & Sun with a ‘first-thing’ Monday morning return (no ticket needed to hire if max height below 10m).  Good Value I thought, and much cheaper than getting someone in to trim them.

I had to fill the tank when I was finished, but that was only 2 litres of diesel ($4).

(These are only some of the palms I had to trim back)

I once hired a jackhammer for a day.  Picked up the afternoon before and dropped it back the morning after.  Cost me $50.  When Aldi had a jackhammer on Special Buys for $199 I jumped at the chance to own my own. Cheaper than having to hire one every time I need one.

—————————————————

Five years ago we had a lot of concreting done here.  Salinity is a big issue here, and rust had eaten through the base of my verandah posts.  When we pulled up our pavers to get concreting done I had to support the weight of our back verandah clear of the line of where concreting was planned.  To do this I enquired about hiring Acrow Props.  $17/prop per day.  I was going to need them for at least a month so I bought 4 from Bunnings for $94 each instead (they are now $119 each).  Better than hiring, and I could sell them at anytime to get back most of my money (not that I would ever sell them as I have used them for other jobs).

Those palm trees look incredible after you've trimmed them.

Yes, it can sometimes be worth it to hire equipment, and sometimes it's better to own it. (I'll admit I'm an "I must own it" personality, but I have fought the tendency when the thing is just for a one-off or hardly-ever-going-to-use-it task.)

I love the tip about last-thing pickup and first-thing return.

I forgot to mention that I have owned a motorhome for 5 years.  Because it is 3.3m high I haven’t been able to wash the roof . . . until last Sunday evening when I used the trailer boom lift to get high enough to wash the roof.  It has made the world of difference.

I cleaned a little bit of the front section of the roof before thinking about taking photos

Victoria has daylight saving, as everyone would be aware, and we are so far west in Mildura the sun sets later here than in Melbourne.  I was able to clean the motorhome roof until after well after 8:30pm.  The time stamp on one of the photos after cleaning is 8:50pm.  This is why picking up at 4:30pm or even 4:50pm still gives about 3 good hours of use + the whole of the next day if working in daylight is required.

I did some paving once and hired a wacka-packa for a day with pickup at close of business.  If I had picked up in the morning I would have needed to pay for 1-1/2 days hire as it was too much work for one day, but not enough for two days.

Electricity savings for those with Solar Panels

Most members with Solar Panels will know this, but some might not have given it much thought.

Do clothes washing, dishwashing and other electricity dependent chores during daylight hours so that you use your own electricity rather than sending excess generation to the supplier/grid.  Use timers on appliances so that they operate during peak electricity generation (between 10am and 3pm here in Mildura).

On weekends, for those who do not work on weekends, consider cooking the main meal of the day at lunchtime and just snack in the evening.  Cooking a roast or using the air fryer during daylight hours will save a little, but that becomes more substantial if done regularly,

We only get 6 or 7 cents per kilowatt hour for exported electricity, but get charged around 30 cents per kilowatt hour at night so the savings can be substantial, especially in places that get lots of sunlight hours.

WW mobile update

all the WW links say that you need to be connected to the WW mobile network for 45 days before you can get a 10% off one shop, but I got 10% off a shop today on the card linked to mobile after just 27 days.

I keep coming back to the idea of neighbourliness… neighbours trying to help each other and combing (where possible) some expenses.

k1ooo, is the 10% off in addition to the 10% off one gets monthly with having insurance through Woolworths or other 10% off benefit? That would make it doubly good for anyone who already had a 10% discount.

yes, you get two 10% off shops per month if you subscribe to WW Everyday Extra and WW Mobile (or insurance).  Not sure if you can get three 10% shops, but definitely 2 is ok.
