Re: Craig McLachlan found not guilty

The key feature of any guilty result is being able to provide proof beyond reasonable doubt that they are guilty.

If there is doubt the accused would likely be found not guilty.

Sometimes they can thank their lawyers, but also it can be due to a weak case on the part of the prosecution.

That's the legal system for you.

Nottie, OJ wasn't acquitted because he had great lawyers, he was acquitted because he was black. Can you imagine the riots if he'd gone to prison (at the time)? Which brings up his celebrity, that played a large part to do with the outcome, also. Race or celebrity, I don't know which one got him over the line but perhaps a combination of the two. A white celebrity most likely would have been convicted.

And you don't think his lawyers knew that and used it to the best of their ability to influence the outcome? His lawyers were brilliant.

Nah, his colour did the work for them.

It didn't work for Bill Cosby or Mike Tyson though, did it?

Deborah, Cosby was convicted decades later - that's where my reference to 'at the time' is of some importance. There would have been a collapse of North American civilization in the 1980's had Bill Cosby been imprisoned on these accusations - even though the acts he was charged for were committed (according to the court) in more recent years.

Mike Tyson was a different kettle of fish. He admitted he was a violent man; he was belligerent in public and confrontational. He looked and acted like a wife beater. It wasn't difficult for the press to paint a picture and for the jury to like the colours they used. OJ Simpson was more debonair and charismatic. He'd appeared in several successful Hollywood films (didn't think much of his performance but loved the premise of 'Capricorn One.') and he knew how to charm. He didn't look like he would murder his wife. He was a sports hero and a film star. That carries double the cachet in the States. Add in his heritage and it's a slam dunk.
