Cyclist and 1Meter rule

I just saw Current Affair where they showed a car turn left into two cyclist. The car had his left indicator on - looked like he was travelling at very slow speed - the cyclist overtook the car on the car's left and he turned left into them. Was it his fault or the cyclist who overtook on the car's left?

They were talking about making a '0ne meter' law. I cannot see how this will work on many roads. To keep one meter away while overtaking a cyclist or group of cyclist would put you over the centre line in many cases - risking a head on collision??? It would be OK when there is a separate lane but SO MANY roads do not have enough room for it.

Opinions on this rule?? How would it work?  Opinions on the Current Affair accident?

Are you telling me that NO BIKE has EVER hit a car and caused damage to the car?  I know different.

I was commenting on  a particular statement that bike riders ride along a car and leave a scratch the length of vehicle.

In fact it is usually cars driven by careless drivers that usually hit pedestrians or bike riders.  If a bike rider runs into your car, i am sure you have a perfect right to demand that they pay for the damage; whether they are insured is not your problem.  In any case most accidents can be prevented if cars stay the 1m from the bike.

Bike riders would much prefer to have proper bike lanes, separated from the traffic as in pics I posted, but all these bike haters do not like that either.  So what the hell do you want?

Bikes are the solution to ever increasing traffic congestion, lack of parking and pollution in cities.

I would like a separate lane, just for me .......  well, I might let you share it, but only if you're nice.

Bike lanes wont solve the issue as both bikes and cars still need to cross each others lanes to turn.

Nothing will sort all problems, but if bikes ride in their lanes, they do not slow down traffic, and at the intersections drivers and riders need to be more aware of each other.

If bike riders want bike lanes somuch why don't they use them when available?

I go past an empty bike-way several times a week and it is always empty, no sorry the occasional pedestrain can be seen walking along.

Oh for g sake.......it's really easy to pass a cyclist with the one metre rule.

And if it's risky then **bleep**ing slow down and wait until it's safe to pass the cyclist

Leaving a 1 mt gap on a road with solid lines down the centre would be near impossible. Overtake leaving 1 mt would see a vehicle over the solid lines....risking a fine. That solid line could go for k's thus leaving a line of traffic behind a bike should that rider not move over into the gravel.

I agree with twinkles**stars.

For once so do I and had that very situation this morning where there were a heap of bike riders on a counrty road and had to cross the double lines to pass them, all was well untill I came across a pack that were 3 wide taking up almost the whole lane doing all of 20KMH in a 100 zone

next time why don't drive right up their ginger& beep the horn at them a few times??

works for me, well, i only ever had to do that once in my entire 38 years of driving!!!!!!

slow down and play it safe

youre the one running a risk of a head on collision crossing the double lines

why risk your life as well as incoming traffic, over cyclists?

were you in a hurry or something?

I will be grateful for another opinion of the van and the 2 bikes riders because if I am interpreting it incorrctly then I would like to know.

It looked to me like the driver just flicked on the indicater and immediately swung left. He either saw them and made a target of them or was careless and didn't even look.

yeah the driver was in the wrong, ficked the indicator on at the last moment, how was the cyclists to know of the vans intentions

another footage showed the van passed the cyclists at one point, then slowed down, how was the cyclists to know he was going to turn left,  negligent driving imo, and should be charged accordingly

Cyclist and 1Meter rule

This topic is making me very sad; it is so typical of our totally selfish, self centred society unwilling to consider anybody else, lack of empathy for others, and not understanding the need for compromise.  Not to mention that it is always someone else's fault.  The 1m rule was introduced because of drivers being aggressive towards bike riders, who have the same right to be on the road as anybody else.  I have seen cars deliberately swerve and drive as close to rider as possible when passing them.

Of-course, bike riders make mistakes, but they are well aware of their vulnerability, and unless they are totally suicidal they are generally careful.  Bike riders do not text, talk on their mobiles, put on their make up or do other things that would distract them from the road.

Australians are terrible drivers; many drive like zombies totally unaware what is happening on the road around them and being very aggressive.  After living for 1 year in Europe, and happily driving around Paris, which is notorious for mad traffic, I found Melbourne very unpleasant place to drive in.

Bike riders can be agressive also.....most are car drivers too are they not? So with that in mind they should understand how difficult it is at times for drivers to see them.

Bike riders DO text,,,this I have seen. They also wear headphones....blocking out traffic noise ๐Ÿ˜ž they ride without hands while drinking ๐Ÿ˜ž Talk to others riders while ride side by side.

Both riders and drivers need to be aware. I am over all this riders are innocent thing.....in my experience some (many) think they own the road.

Totally agree with what Twinkle says.

Driving through The Dandenong Ranges here in Melbourne is a nightmare, when you come accross a group of bike riders, they are suppose to ride in a single file, but they dont and they dont care.

The roads going through the hills are really narrow in parts, and there is no hope of passing them as it is a double line, so you just have to sit behind them.

They are not innocent, they flaunt the law, even the police say they have to ride in a single lane especially in the hills........but they dont, they are a law unto themselves.
