Cyclist and 1Meter rule

I just saw Current Affair where they showed a car turn left into two cyclist. The car had his left indicator on - looked like he was travelling at very slow speed - the cyclist overtook the car on the car's left and he turned left into them. Was it his fault or the cyclist who overtook on the car's left?

They were talking about making a '0ne meter' law. I cannot see how this will work on many roads. To keep one meter away while overtaking a cyclist or group of cyclist would put you over the centre line in many cases - risking a head on collision??? It would be OK when there is a separate lane but SO MANY roads do not have enough room for it.

Opinions on this rule?? How would it work?  Opinions on the Current Affair accident?

We have a one meter rule in QLD now.. I think it is great.

The driver should have seen the cyclist and watched and waited for the cyclist to undertake. Well that is I do anyway.

I also have a couple that cycle on my main road into work. It is 100kmph and there is no bike way on that road so they just ride along the side best they can.

If I can't overtake them because there is on coming traffic I slow down. It just takes a bit of planning, watch the road, see what is coming and be prepared.

Oh for g sake.......it's really easy to pass a cyclist with the one metre rule.

And if it's risky then **bleep**ing slow down and wait until it's safe to pass the cyclist

Rabbit... it does need a lot from local governments to invest more in bike paths and better roads. If you have the rule you do need to think about areas that do not have any space for that overtake to happen

Let's see - cyclist 10-15km v car 80km - Yes that should be easy - don't worry about the  6 car pileup with people running into the back of you -  I'm glad I asked.

the same rules apply to cyclists as cars and unless a car has a RH indicator it is an offence to pass on the left side,

and as for the idiot cyclists riding on poads with a 100kmh speed limit, if they are blocking the road and a car is coming and no way of stopping guess which one I will be hitting. yep always pick the object that will have least impact

Cyclists can use roads you know.

They cannot use a motorway and I've never seen one on one.......what's with car drivers that think they own the roads?!???

But if there is a cyclist on the left hand side of the road (where they usually are) and you decide you want to turn left you have to wait for that cyclist to pass even though it is "undertaking" as the bike can't just go around you can it?

I am just thinking about what I do....up here we don't really have that much of a problem because not a lot of people ride....  I  pull up behind the cyclist and slow down and then turn left.... not cut the rider off....  if you know a rider is there and you cut it off isn't that your fault?

Anyone see the footage on a current affair that ran behind the story?

For mine the two cyclists came from well behind the vehicle they hit and passed the vehicle on the wrong side rather than being lega it's just easier for the cyclists to keep their speed on the inside if there is no bike lane rather than, braking, pulling into the traffic and passing a car that is parking or entering a driveway on the correct right hand side as all other vehicles are required.

Think about where does a cyclist position themselves when they are going to turn right across oncoming traffic?

needs to be a big sticker on the back of all vehicles especially for cyclists.

(you see these on the backs of trucks trucks they are aimed at cars that overtake trucks in the inside lane)
