Diary of our stinking Govt.

As it's more than 100 days now, it has been suggested that a new thread was needed.  The current govt has been breaking promises and telling lies at a rate so fast it's hard to keep up.Woman Happy

This below is worrying, "independent" pffft, as if your own doctor is somehow what? biased, it's ridiculous. So far there is talk of only including people under a certain age 30-35, for now. Remember that if your injured in a car, injured at work or get ill, you too might need to go on the DSP. They have done a similar think in the UK with devastating consequences.

and this is the 2nd time recently where the Govt has referred to work as welfare???? So when you go to work tomorrow (or tuesday), just remember that's welfare.

Independent doctors could be called in to reassess disability pensioners, Federal Government says

The Federal Government is considering using independent doctors to examine disability pensioners and assess whether they should continue to receive payments.

Currently family doctors provide reports supporting claims for the Disability Support Pension (DSP).

But Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews is considering a measure that would see independent doctors reassess eligibility.

"We are concerned that where people can work, the best form of welfare is work," Mr Andrews said at a press conference.

Re: Diary of our stinking Govt.

I understand that Plaintiff actioned the Court Proceedings & certainly had every right to .....but what I mean is, these LNP morons in Govt would have known all along that what THEY did in beginning of this 'STOP the BOAWTS!' SAGA was unlawful....and would have had their own legal advice beforehand.....thay simply wanted to be seen to be 'stopping the boats' bs......did not care what cost to human beings in (unlawful) detention and $$$$ cost to us as Citizens.

Turnbull sends community television to the gallows, leaves sector fuming

Thanks to Malcolm Turnbull’s surprise announcement yesterday, community TV stations have 15 months left on air.

The community television industry body was blindsided by Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s announcement yesterday that the government was pushing community television off the air.

“We were never officially advised about this,” Australian Community Television Alliance president Richard McLelland told Daily Review sister site Crikey yesterday. “Getting a transcript of [Turnbull’s] speech was the first we heard about it.

.........

which will mean more ads on TV time. Govts way of making $$$'s.

Community TV

It's fair to say that community television has launched a thousand careers - and not just those of the boldface names who got their starts there.

As Rove McManus, a now world-famous graduate of community TV, pointed out in a statement on Thursday: "What I gained from my Channel 31 experience was collaborating with fellow creative people in a group environment that taught me how to be a host and them how to be producers, camera operators, lighting technicians, set builders and editors."

The federal government's decision to shunt Australia's free-to-air community channels on to the internet at the end of 2015 has come as a shock and disappointment to the TV industry, in particular those who launched their careers on community television, such as radio duo Hamish and Andy, Corinne Grant, Dave Thornton, Tommy Little and Waleed Aly.

McManus has urged the public to sign the petition, i.committocommunitytv.org.au, which attracted more than 8500 supporters within hours of going live.

The general manager of Melbourne's C31, Richard McLennan, says that the move will almost certainly lead to the death of community TV in Australia and he rejects Communication Minister Malcolm Turnbull's assertion it "is in the best interests of community television".

Re: Diary of our stinking Govt.

COMMUNITY television channels will be forced from the airwaves and onto the internet under new government plans to reclaim and resell the spectrum currently used to broadcast their services.

The switch-off forms part of new government plans to reallocate the spectrum from the “sixth channel” — which is primarily used for the broadcast of community TV channel — so that it can be used by free-to-air television broadcasters or alternatively sold off to telcos such as Telstra and Optus who are keen to get more spectrum to improve their mobile phone services and deliver faster 4G download speeds.

Spectrum refers to the electromagnetic frequencies used to transmit electronic communications, including mobile telephony, television broadcasts and GPS signals.

Re: Diary of our stinking Govt.

I wonder what this "review" will come up with? http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/sep/12/marine-reserves-review-coalition-says-recreationa...

Marine reserves review: Coalition says recreational fishers have been left out

The Coalition has suspended usage plans for the vast network of marine reserves set out by the previous Labor government

The Coalition has launched a review of the vast network of marine reserves set out by the previous Labor government, to deliver what it calls a more “sensible balance” between fishing and environmental concerns.

In 2012 Labor formally protected more than 2.3 million square kilometres of ocean environment, creating the largest network of marine reserves in the world. The reserves are made up of five main zones surrounding every state and territory, banning fishing in some of these areas.

The Coalition has suspended the usage plans for these zones pending a review, arguing that recreational fishers had been unfairly locked out of the process.

Environmental groups have criticised the review of the marine reserves, pointing out that consultation took place over a number of years, with around 80,000 submissions considered by the previous Labor government.

“It’s unnecessary, it puts into question much needed protection of marine life, and it will cost a lot of money,” Michelle Grady, ocean campaigner at the Pew Charitable Trusts, told Guardian Australia. “There has been 10 years of science and consultation, in fact it started under the John Howard government. I’m perplexed why this is happening.

“The vast majority of Australia’s marine environment remains open to recreational fishing. Most of the protected areas start hundreds of kilometres offshore.

“The government has a responsibility to look after this ecosystem like we do on land. We never question national parks on land.

These areas were put aside to give species a fighting chance, and the benefits that come from that include protecting fish stocks for everyone. It’s just common sense.”

Grady said the marine reserves protect endangered sea lions, as well as key breeding ground for whales and dolphins.

Arthur Sinodinos says donation laundering scheme didn't pass ‘pub test’

Sidelined senator tells corruption inquiry he was not aware FEF money was from prohibited donors and accepts no responsibility

The former finance minister, Arthur Sinodinos, has told a Sydney corruption inquiry that a scheme to launder banned donations to the New South Wales Liberal party through a third-party fundraiser did not pass “the pub test” and “didn’t look right”.

But the sidelined senator, who chaired the party’s finance committee at the time, said he was not aware that money from the Free Enterprise Foundation (FEF) was being sourced from prohibited donors, and that he accepted no responsibility for the donations winding up in Liberal party coffers.

Pressed by counsel assisting the Independent Commission Against Corruption (Icac), Geoffrey Watson, SC, on what he had done to “determine whether the funds that had been raised had been raised lawfully”, Sinodinos admitted he had done “nothing”.
