As it's more than 100 days now, it has been suggested that a new thread was needed. The current govt has been breaking promises and telling lies at a rate so fast it's hard to keep up.
This below is worrying, "independent" pffft, as if your own doctor is somehow what? biased, it's ridiculous. So far there is talk of only including people under a certain age 30-35, for now. Remember that if your injured in a car, injured at work or get ill, you too might need to go on the DSP. They have done a similar think in the UK with devastating consequences.
and this is the 2nd time recently where the Govt has referred to work as welfare???? So when you go to work tomorrow (or tuesday), just remember that's welfare.

Independent doctors could be called in to reassess disability pensioners, Federal Government says
The Federal Government is considering using independent doctors to examine disability pensioners and assess whether they should continue to receive payments.
Currently family doctors provide reports supporting claims for the Disability Support Pension (DSP).
But Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews is considering a measure that would see independent doctors reassess eligibility.
"We are concerned that where people can work, the best form of welfare is work," Mr Andrews said at a press conference.

"so in your eyes, JG joining the speakers circuit after her retirement from politics justifies his double dipping.???"
Double dipping? "please explain" with figures.
Meanwhile D9205 , you might discover parliament is in recess, and the lecture was actually part of a charity event
One of Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World" and Forbes' "World's Most Powerful Women" former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard lights up the lecture circuit with her powerful presentations
Gosh that seems super, but our ex Poor Me seems to have vanished from the Forbes 100 (Gina Rinehart) still hovers around 37, and Time seems to have run out of her. However one must expect a "little" padding within the C&P material because it is from the same organisation that has her on its books.
Oh gosh:
"Despite the federal budget being $19.4 billion in deficit, Prime Minister Julia Gillard and her Ministers have taken around 160 overseas trips since last July with spouses being taken along on about 30 occasions."
AFAIK they still had jobs that they were supposed to be doing here !

Well, no. not really. You see, last July Tony Abbott was our prime minister.
Anyway, Julia Gillard is yesterday's hero. There have been two prime ministers since her time in office. It's not useful to hark back to the past with a sort of childish "well look at what she did" **bleep**-for-tat petulance.
Take the issue as it should be taken - as a stand alone issue. Is it appropriate for a current sitting member of Parliament to undertake public speaking engagements for private recompense in money?
any elected representative in any parliament.
Past memebrs of parliament no longer holding public office, no longer engaged in the service of the country as a member of government, are in a different position as private citizens and they can do what they like with their time.
Not so with people currently holding an elected govt office representing their constituents.
So, is it appropriate (is it even against the law?) for a currently serving government member to go about taking money in exchange for his public speaking engagements?
No comparisons with the behaviour of past persons is neccessary or called for. The question stands alone.

"No comparisons with the behaviour of past persons is neccessary or called for. The question stands alone."
Nonsense, within this debate it is necessary to indicate to those with a closed mindset the fallibility of all , and that includes (obviously) those from the past.
OK, so when will the now decreed beginning of "past persons" history commence?, the gang tried to make it post 2013 election (understandably) but failed
"So, is it appropriate (is it even against the law?) for a currently serving government member to go about taking money in exchange for his public speaking engagements?"
Google is working and Codes of Conduct would be a good place to start! However I am interested in the details involved apropos the "currently serving government member" (a "he" I gather?) and the actual monies involved.
Not the charity lecture event in London recently, really? Do tell, ALL.
"Is it appropriate for a current sitting member of Parliament to undertake public speaking engagements for private recompense in money?" That is a repeat.
"Past memebrs of parliament no longer holding public office, no longer engaged in the service of the country as a member of government, are in a different position as private citizens and they can do what they like with their time." .........I do love definitive statements, here!
Nonsense, again, read Codes of Conduct (Post-separation employment)
Interesting the mention of law and a (understandable) desire to set a beginning of time for personal behaviour commentary, because in society the laws governing it are its very foundation and indeed its existence. These laws, Common Law and Statutory Law, are obviously historical, but when applied mould our future.
I do though understand, and actually agree JCC , in this case, with your comment: "No comparisons with the behaviour of past persons is neccessary or called for."

Overlooking that JCC , I perceive myself more in the image of Daedalus (the father) , not the son: Icarus. You might have noticed that I am wearing a pilots oxygen mask in my picture which ensures no anoxia when flying at altitude, close to the sun, thus no "prangs"
Here is an early picture of me pre-flighting my son (Bads/Icarus) before a journey "somewhere among the clouds above" ( I am a Yeats fan)

Our malodorous Govt would appear to morphing into an odoriferous one . The ubiquitous C&Ps, sans comments, are hiding, and my (working) Google is joining Harvey on lay-by because of a dearth of definitive comments (facts optional) to investigate.
Gone/reduced are the yummy dredged international C&Ps which enlightened us as to how other countries perceive Terra Australis, and the major banks 1/2 yearly financial profit reports have not produced the usual plethora of wailings from those who are likely to be part of the $4,291 average credit card debt, per person, mostly borne by those "evil" banks.
I am not wailing though, as my favourite bank (CBA) has/is returning good rosy (smelling) dividends.
We are long overdue for a graph gang!

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has been unable to rule out his department's involvement in the approval of a Nauruan visa for an Australian journalist.
The Australian associate editor Chris Kenny travelled to the island nation earlier this month, becoming the first foreign reporter to visit within 18 months.

Mr Ronalds also said the charity was seeking compensation over the treatment of Save The Children workers who were accused, but later cleared by the Moss inquiry of facilitating protests on the island.
"I think Save the Children and Save the Children staff were made a scapegoat in that situation," he said
