Diary of our stinking Govt.

As it's more than 100 days now, it has been suggested that a new thread was needed.  The current govt has been breaking promises and telling lies at a rate so fast it's hard to keep up.Woman Happy

This below is worrying, "independent" pffft, as if your own doctor is somehow what? biased, it's ridiculous. So far there is talk of only including people under a certain age 30-35, for now. Remember that if your injured in a car, injured at work or get ill, you too might need to go on the DSP. They have done a similar think in the UK with devastating consequences.

and this is the 2nd time recently where the Govt has referred to work as welfare???? So when you go to work tomorrow (or tuesday), just remember that's welfare.

Independent doctors could be called in to reassess disability pensioners, Federal Government says

The Federal Government is considering using independent doctors to examine disability pensioners and assess whether they should continue to receive payments.

Currently family doctors provide reports supporting claims for the Disability Support Pension (DSP).

But Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews is considering a measure that would see independent doctors reassess eligibility.

"We are concerned that where people can work, the best form of welfare is work," Mr Andrews said at a press conference.

Quote from Abbott, as published in the Guardian. A stupid comment.

No need to add anything else or bring in past articles that aren't at all related to the above quote.

Is the Jakarta Post a Murdoch Publication, as that is quite clearly what debra is referring to (Murdoch Publications)

I look forward to more quotes from The Jakarta Post also.

The Australian - scraping the bottom of the barrel for stories. Can't see any value in this one at all.

Rich, godless find it easy voting Green

The appeal of the Greens to the rich and godless has been underlined by an analysis of voting patterns in the NSW election.

Analysis of election results by The Australian using 2011 census data compiled by the NSW parliamentary library reveals the secret of the Greens’ success appears to be the party’s appeal to atheists and the well-off.

Mining giant digs in at tax inquiry

Mining giant BHP Billiton has sought to stare down a Senate inquiry into corporate tax avoidance, with company officials risking being found in contempt of parliament after refusing to provide details of an audit of its tax schemes run through Singapore.

Australia’s biggest taxpayers BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto yesterday admitted they are being audited by the Australian Taxation Office over the Singaporean marketing hubs through which they funnel billions of dollars.

In heated exchanges at the Senate inquiry, top BHP officials repeatedly dismissed questions about the tax probe, including whether the ATO had spelled out how much money it owed in unpaid tax.

While Rio Tinto provided details of the profits and taxes paid by its Singapore operation, BHP declined to do so. BHP head of group tax Jane Michie said the ATO’s view on what BHP owed was “kind of not really relevant”.

However, publicly available documents filed in Singapore show the company paid no tax on profits of $US941 million in the last financial year.

The revelations came during the final hearing of a Senate economics committee inquiry into corporate tax avoidance, chaired by Labor senator Sam Dastyari.

The federal government is stepping up efforts to claw back revenue from the mining giants in the face of alleged widespread profit shifting to low-tax regimes.

So far this week, the inquiry has moved from Sydney to Canberra and Melbourne hearing from key executives from global technology groups Microsoft, Apple and Google, as well as tax partners from the big four accounting groups, who defended their roles in advising Australia’s corporates on tax minimisation.

The technology groups were put under intense pressure over their alleged profit-shifting strategies, adding weight to calls for Canberra to clamp down on the use of tax havens by multinational corporations.

.....Rio conceded it had reached a settlement with the ATO in a separate matter, described by Rio Tinto’s general manager of tax for the Asia-Pacific, Ann-Maree Wolff, as “a relatively modest assessment in relation to an earlier period”.

...The inquiry was adjourned briefly to consider BHP’s request for public interest immunity after Mr Cudmore and Ms Michie repeatedly refused to answer questions on the grounds that the information was commercially sensitive.

After the break, Senator Dastyari told the pair their request was declined and said they could either answer the questions on notice, provide the information confidentially or refuse to answer and face being referred to the full Senate.

Mr Edmands told the inquiry total profit from Singapore last year was $719m, including Australian exports and commodities trading, and it paid tax at 5 per cent — significantly lower than the advertised Singaporean corporate tax rate of 17 per cent.

Australia’s corporate tax rate is 30 per cent.

Compelling news:  "Treasury does not know" and  "Australia could be losing "

Whilst I accept that there is little on display here  to indicate that some know what transfer pricing/taxation hubs are, together with actual forgone taxation,  I would (of course) point out that the Circus commissioned the Henry Tax Review, (sorry about history) and of the 138 recommendations implemented just  2 (TWO).

Simply:

Tax havens did not come into existence in Sept 2013

Transfer pricing  did not come into existence in Sept 2013.

" there is nothing wrong with the Jakarta post, it's very similar to Al Jazeera."

Apart from the initials  the similarity ends there. However I do understand the "need" to secure  acceptable "stories" for MYOP distribution. The last one was particularly  of nonsense  quality (if you understand basic immigration law)

The unconfirmed and I assert manufactured STORY appears to have sunk (like many of the Circus era refugee boats)

Repeat:

" Asylum seekers 'turned back to Indonesia'

FIFTEEN asylum seekers say they spent three days on Christmas Island before being turned back to Indonesia."

Do you ever consider basic research? once an asylum seeker reaches land, the protocols are clear, even your C&P includes:

" We don't know for sure what happened, but that's what they say," Mr Irfan told AAP."

That would apply to the MYOPS here, but the story is also without confirmation.

Leaving aside the unconfirmed source, would you wish to return to Rudd's  removal of the Pacific Solution? or are you just grasping at anti Abbott  fodder for cathartic reasons?.

"We don't know for sure what happened, but that's what they say",  and if it sounds good we will post is (sans research/facts)

so what?? who are you to judge. All I did was post an article from Jakarta post that had been printed, I did not personally write the article, nor do I live in Indonesia.  Do you??

we've also seen articles confirming reports that the abbott govt has just quietly ordered boats from Vietnam. That tells me they haven't stopped the boats, if you are prepared to believe everything they want you to believe, that's your problem, not mine

Obviously some are running out of valid points or any point at all in posts, if they keep harking back to non issues like this. I think it is going to be a cycle now.

It was a good article. And published also in The Australian (right wing bias, loss making Murdoch rag) plus other Aust msm outlets.
