Diary of our stinking Govt.

As it's more than 100 days now, it has been suggested that a new thread was needed.  The current govt has been breaking promises and telling lies at a rate so fast it's hard to keep up.Woman Happy

This below is worrying, "independent" pffft, as if your own doctor is somehow what? biased, it's ridiculous. So far there is talk of only including people under a certain age 30-35, for now. Remember that if your injured in a car, injured at work or get ill, you too might need to go on the DSP. They have done a similar think in the UK with devastating consequences.

and this is the 2nd time recently where the Govt has referred to work as welfare???? So when you go to work tomorrow (or tuesday), just remember that's welfare.

Independent doctors could be called in to reassess disability pensioners, Federal Government says

The Federal Government is considering using independent doctors to examine disability pensioners and assess whether they should continue to receive payments.

Currently family doctors provide reports supporting claims for the Disability Support Pension (DSP).

But Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews is considering a measure that would see independent doctors reassess eligibility.

"We are concerned that where people can work, the best form of welfare is work," Mr Andrews said at a press conference.

i had a friend from Mauritius whose father was a doctor over there. When they moved here, his father was a taxi driver. I assume foreign doctors have to go through more training here before they can practise? In his case though, he had young family to support so just had to put food on the table. This is going back quite a few years

Yes, that was a problem, a few articles in 2011 about that, not sure what the status is now. That doctors were encouraged to move here to practice as doctors but they tests they had to sit were too stringent so they a lot didn't pass  and they had to keep working in menial jobs instead.

The Govt should have vetted them better first before they came here, instead of the doctors finding out when they got here, they most likely wouldn't be able to practicse as doctors here.

How is it we have to import so many medical personnel?

Has our own ratio of young ppl people entering the medical profession ie, nurses, doctors, declined, or has the ratio of sick people inclined?

Because Howard cut the places.

This shortage of doctors can partly be traced to a 1996 decision by the Howard government, under then health minister Michael Wooldridge, to reduce funding for medical education places and to cut Medicare rebates for some doctors. The government relied on figures that forecast an oversupply of doctors by 2015.

Dr Brian Morton, a Sydney GP and chairman of the Australian Medical Association's Council of General Practice, says: ''The information that the [Howard] government had was grossly inaccurate and shortsighted. Despite the [contrasting] figures that the AMA had at the time, the government wasn't listening.

The community is paying for that now.''

Thank you for posting that. It does explain why there aren't enough Australian educated doctors to meet the demand in Australia.

Their was a bit of a fight as well about lowering the standards.
Thankfully that was a battle that was lost and standards were maintained.

We have enough problem with lowering of standards on the basis of PpC carp,
We don't need carp doctors as well.

Agree they should have been told before but if they cant pass a medical exam,
Well, i dont want them working here and I don't think many others do either.

Australia’s Health Minister, Sussan Ley, says Medicare is out of control:

…our Medicare system is growing at a rapid and unsustainable rate.”

This is an outright lie.

Medicare spending and GP rebates cost us bugger-all, relatively speaking.

Medicare represents just 30% of the Federal government’s overall health spending, and GP rebates only 8%.

Our GDP and tax revenue are increasing by a lot more each year than our health and Medicare spending.

Should or does it need to be 30% ?

Maybe their is waste in it and money can be saved.

Anyway, the Govt was ELECTED to govern so let them get on with it.

Spread the word about this current Govt's failures so people are aware of these and don't vote for them next election.

Poor governing they are doing... introduce dud policies and PM back flips on them 24 hours after saying he won't budge on them.

Mickey Mouse style government?
